Anyone interested in the old road tests of the CBs ?
« on: December 22, 2005, 02:10:07 PM »
I've kept every magazine I've bought from 1966 on and I have a lot of old bike magazines that I have been digging out since I got the CB bug back. Is there any interest in me scanning the old road tests and putting them in the gallery or somewhere? I've reread the 1972 CB500 and 1969 K0 and 1973 K3 road tests withing the last few weeks. And there are lots more, I just haven't run across them lately.

I am!  That's my bike to the left.  It's a 1976 cb750 k6, but I imagine a '72, or '75 road test would read about the same.  Going back on that old literature is a treat to read.  It's fun to remember their point of perspective!

I'd be interested in the '69 K0. I think any and all would be of interest to members in general. Nice pack ratting there.  ;)

Definitely.  If you look on www.sohc4.net, I have many old roadtests online.  If you can scan yours to pdf's, I'll add the pdfs to the site and fill in what isn't there now.

These will be large enough files that you will not b able to upload them to the forums, but I can work with you to get these online.

I have several for the 650's but maybe a 350/360 twin.  A layout of the coors twins would be nice too.

Let's see that pic!  Yes, it is shiny (the kerker is a little rusty).  The tank is a repaint, but it's quite presentable.  Thanks for the compliment!

Glen,
I've got a 1973 750  K3 article scanned into jpegs and am working on Cycle 1969 first roadtest. Do you want me to send you JPEGs and you make PDFs out of them?

6pkrunner sent me about 14 or 15 scanned roadtests.  I'm getting them online in pdf form as quickly as I can - hell, it's 3am as I write this after finishing a couple more tonight.  Here is the link to what's been put up so far - all CB750K/F material so far.

http://sohc4.us/?q=node/256

I'd really appreciate it if someone would take the time to look over this stuff carefully and let me know if there are any problems.  I'm trying to carefully proof-read things as I go along, but - well, it is 3am and I'm well past tired.

I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate it when I get stuff like this.  Sometimes it takes a few months to get it online, though.

Glenn,
I had a look at the 75 750F review and it looks good, well done and thanks for these reviews. Are you interested in another review that I have? I will scan it and if you need it then ok, if not that's ok as well.
Jim.

That would be great.  Any scans should be at least 300dpi since I use an OCR (character recognition if you don't know) program to help clean up the text and it only works if the scans are distinct.  I can work off jpegs, tiffs, or any other common image format.

Awesome work . . . printed up, they make good inserts for my Playboys. My wife will never know I'm reading even more motorcycle literature (I got the Duckworth book and "Collecting Vintage Japanese Motorcycles" from my brother for Christmas).

Thanks - karma point to 6pkrunner.

I've got probably another 14 or so to scan right away- well when time permits, And in the pile of magazines...any guess would be good. There's about 1700 magazines piled up. Automotive and motorcycle only. ;D

Bob - I'm OCD to the max. The stuff I still have afterr 50 plus years on this planet is ridiculous. The wife is the "Toss it away" queen, so I stow away my gear in areas she's unaccustomed to. The garage for one. Today I went in to get the solder gun for some home fixin's and was in reading nike magazines from 1968 to 1972 for well over 4 hours. Just tripped out and relived the past for a nice afternoon. Now the wife doesn't get a bath tonight, but hey I was in the era when the CB750 and Z1 were the absolute tyrants of the street.
Funny I had a friend's Hayabusa out for a tour this year and while it is blistering fast and handles like its on rails, at 50 plus years I'm happier putting along on the old CBs. I've got an FJ1100 and never drove it this year at all, used the 1975 GT750 instead. And was happier. ;D

6pk,
I agree the big fast bikes hold no interest for me either; they encourage you to drive too fast for any road conditions. I also think they make you feel you are a better rider than you may be. I had an XJR 1300 for 6 months and rode a total of 300 miles. I have had the CB for 3-4 months and have covered over a 1000 miles already.. It is the feeling of riding that I enjoy, not the speed..

Jim, I agree totally. When I had my first CB750 and the Z1 came out, my wheels spun on how to aquire a Zedder for myself. A friend bought one right away and I spent a lot of time in its saddle. I never get get a tomato red Zee bike as I prefered my CB more. And the next year I got the K3 new and never regretted it. Today the old CBs are like a long lost friend and can offer what the high zoot bikes don't have and don't know what they lack. Fully enclosed bodywork for one. I love a non-bodywork bike. Show the world that engine. Now today's engines are totally function (read not-pretty) and the enclosing bodywork not only streamlines the bike, but hides the otherwise stark and non-pleasant mill. The youngsters love it as the swoopy bodywork will add 7mph to that 172mph top speed.
It's been 30 years since i've been over 120 on a bike, and will probably never go there again. 80mph to get around traffic is plenty. And park a pristine CB next to the local canyon carvers at the local Gag and McPuke and see which garners the most looks and crowd. ;D
Not that I build and drive these for the appreciation of others at all. This is purely for my pleasure and be damned with the rest. The 1967-1974 era was my permanent snapshot of biking and that's where my energies are spent.

6pkrunner,
I can identify, I also have quite a collection of magazines to include motorcycle, cars, trucks and 4 wheel drive. I have some motorcycle magazines that go back to about 67' or 68'. I need to get them out, organize them and make a list so I'll know for sure what I do have. I've also got about a hundred Walnecks magazines and I do have them set up w/ a list of them on my computer along with all the roadtests from them (These road tests were reprints from when the motorcycles were new. I'll to get out of here for now, Later on    Bill

Hi Jaan,

I have the "Original Honda CB750" by Joyhn Wyatt, and have seen the Duckworth book in the motorbook shop catalouges - is it a good read/worth having?
Would also be interested in the Haycock "Honda CB750: the complete story" - anyone have this? Good?

For Xmas I bought myself "Honda Motorcycles" by Frank - an excellent read with detailed and fascinating history of the ideas and dreams of the Japanes engineers and their Amreican sales team. Very light on for offroad bikes if youre into those though.

Cheers,

Neil.

-the local Chapters here had it on the shelf for over a year. I desparately wanted it, but the $55 price tag kept me away. $20-$25 maybe, but never $55. I used to flip throuh it every time I went there for my magazine fix.
