Here is my project bike
« on: December 22, 2005, 03:16:58 PM »
I'm positing it here for now just because I'm excited about it.  I'll post in the gallery tomorrow.  I took a short ride and it will spin the back tire with the throttle alone - surprised me  :o

Immediate needs and jobs.

1. Carbs need sorted out - the overflow leaks and I'm suspicious they don't draw like they should.

2. Front brakes need rebuilt

3.  The rest is just cosmetic.  I've already got a set of much needed clubmans and a sweet set of body work ready to go.

4.  I'm going to lower it a bit more and I'll probably try a set of Mac drag pipes as well

Carbs and clubmans tomorrow.  :)
 ;D ;D ;D ;D

Thats mean!  You gotta include a list of mods the PO did.  He was obviously a gear head and liked to tinker.  Id like to know more about that iginition set up.  Youre gonna lower it more?!  Cool..you should do an extended swing arm as well...and wheelie bars just for the hell of it.  Whats with the 1000 on the side cover?  cant make out the letters before it.  Overbored Im guessing?  Yeah Id be excited too!  Good find.

Here are the mods that I know for sure.  Russ Collins 1000 cc (it says RC1000 on the side cover) Russ Collins distributor.  Yosh. valve train.  Dual dic brakes on the front.  Aluminum fenders. A ton of Chrome.  Custom guages.

The bike is all documentd from the guy (first owner) who had most of the work done ( I'm the third owner).  I'll learn much more there.

Can't resist - another pic.

I'd replace those tires. They have been out of production for 25 years. It apparently wasn't ridden much....good for you. ;)

It is kind of amazing - the bike had a bunch of money spent on it but it hasn't been used up.

Damn.  Someone knew what the hell they were doing.  It must sound ablsolutely bestial!  Id like to know more about the RC stuff if anyone has good info.  I have a shortened version of an RC moded 750 popin em off in the movies section and that thing sounds monsterous.  Performance bred cams tend to have that effect in any machine  8).  So what are you going for looks wise?  Sounds like a mix of drag and cafe?  Tell us more about this body kit ya got for it...you lucky bastard.  And yeah swap that rubber for some fresh sticky tires and youll go from: spins the tire with throttle alone, to:  does strait-up-and-down wheelies with a flick of the go stick!

Drag/Cafe is it.  I posted end of day one pictures in the Gallery (check it out and let me know what you think please).  First issue too - got modify some switches so I can run the wire on the outside of the bars and not throught the bars.  I have some ideas, but suggestions are welcome.

Bodywork - I've got three.  The one shown, A mint set of stock (my favorite) is on the way, and a set of flat black with a Mr. Horsepwer theme.

I did get it good and warmed up today and rode it a bit more - FUN  ;D  ;D

Wow!  :o  I read the article.  I had no idea that much work went into it!  Those guys were artists.  Not only in the careful modification but also for them to come up with the perfect set up like that...so much to consider and know, and probably a ton of trial and error before they got it just right.  So youre engine was assembled by those dudes?  Or did the 1st owner build it.  If he did he must have had one hell of a shop, and been a damn good mechanic.  That is one finely tuned machine you have there.  The article had all I needed to know.  Eat up some crotch rockets for me man!

Here is a good Russ Collins Article:
http://www.hondahog.com/RCeng.htm

When reading this article, it is interesting to see the change in perspective almost 30 years brings.  It goes on about 100 hp at the rear wheel and the exotic methods to obtain it.  Now any squid in shorts and flip-flops can have the same thing in a 600 anytime he wants.  Ain't progress grand?

TT, I see your point, but what did said squid do to get that kinda power.  Just threw some plastic around, put himself in debt, and probably sooner or later, in the grave.  I will always respect a true gear head who uses craftsmanship, knowlege, hard work and time, to get more out of a budget machine(car or bike...or anything) than some yuppie, or wanna be yuppie who simply throws money at something to get the end result but never appreciates the means by which it gets there.  But mabey thats just the typical blue collar point of view?

Actually, my point was that when the article was written, 100 rear wheel horsepower was considered exotic and something that only experts would have access to.  Now any recent 600 sportbike has that kind of power and it is more or less taken for granted.  That's all.

Oh.  Wonder what that will translate to in another 30 years.  They'll have to draw the line somewere huh?  But it seems as long as we continue to make things faster, and lighter, we keep getting insane enough to jump on em.
