If there's factory paint under there it may be trashed anyway, making the whole issue moot :)

Acid damage at the rear or fuel damage in the valley between the clutch are and points area are both very common on these motors.

I am up in the air on the paint issue..
 pretty sure my motor # 700 was NOT painted.
 
Any motor that has ever been out of the frame, could have been painted later..

 Most of these motors when you see them, look obviously cast, I doubt they would appear so after being painted..

They still look cast after painting, at least I think this one does.

I had a 3-digit motor and it was painted.  When the chain went through in June of '70, the paint was evident at the broken edges.  It had never been out of the frame.
