There is a large female moose dying at my house...
« on: November 25, 2009, 07:09:19 AM »
Yup you read that right, 2 days ago a guy we let hunt on our property came across a BIG female moose that has been sighted around the area...she was laying in the back field and breathing very heavy.

Encon is coming today to check it out and figure out a way to remove her. I was gonna go take a pic this morning but that just didn't feel right...

I hate seeing animals suffer. I have no issues with hunting and making a clean quick kill, but long drawn out deaths are no bueno. Dunno what the situation is but hope it turns out well, or at least as well as can be hoped for.

Lol no not giving birth...she has a brain worm...or something weird like that. This is information that was relayed to me by my mom...so who knows how accurate that is lol.

I would have put her out of her misery myself with my 1903A4 springfield but after the hunters discovered her and called the state police as well as Encon they were even told specifically NOT to harm the moose in any way. To me that just seems cruel if she is dying...but at least we don't have to dispose of the body I guess.

Fish and Game people (I'm assuming that's what Encon is) would much rather an animal suffer a lingering, painful death than have human intervention in nature's way.  Stories abound, from allowing a buffalo to starve and freeze to death after falling through ice in Yellowstone Park to tales of deer left in fields or roadsides to die 'naturally' after being hit by cars.  Their reasoning, I guess, is that if the animal survives it will pass it superiour genes on to offspring.

The problem is...if we HAD put it out of it's misery...disposing of the body would be damn near impossible. The moose is well known in the area and has been on the news because she was wandering around...so to shoot her then call someone to dispose of the body would have caused an uproar. At least this way Encon will "supposedly" dispose of said remains...but we'll see.

As a born and bred Londoner I've never seen a moose, but it's one of he few things I'd like to do before I die. What are they like, temprementally? Shy, stupid, skittish? I'm assuming they're something like a cross between a horse and a deer. I like the way they appear so laid back and graceful, while looking a bit goofy.

I think I like them because I remember being very young and seeing the fossilized remains of an Irish Elk (now all extinct)  in a museum & being awe-struck. Here's what sort of size they were:

My impression is that moose are not afraid of humans and are downright mean if they feel threatened.  Not safe creatures according to the park service.

Moose can be downright dangerous and attack for only reasons they know. They have attacked Freight Trains and even a B-52 Bomber on the runway. They were wel known for ramming small cars of the road.

But we were boys, and boys will be boys, and so they will. To us, everything was dangerous, but what of that? Had we not been made to live forever?

i killed a huge moose with an 82 subaru gl-10 in greensboro VT back in 88. the moose also killed the subaru and nearly me :D  fortunately i wasnt hurt too badly as it took them nearly 45 minutes to cut me out of the crushed car. some folks are more afraid of moose than bears, with damn good reason too.

You guys make them seem like vicious stalking predators!!!  :D

More often they attack for 2 reasons...either to defend themselves (or more likely their offspring) or when they are in rut and will basically try to hump anything!!! When a Bull is uhm...in the mood get the hell out of the way! They even try to hump cars!! They are absolutely INSANE during season. Nothing like coming out of your door and seeing your car all dented up and covered in Moose jizz! Didn't happen to me but a buddy in the Clagary area sent me pics. If I can dig them up I will post them.

Only ever saw 2 somewhat up close (less than a hundred yards) and they really are awe inspiring!

this is heart breaking. someone (an official?) should go out and do the ol' girl in for god sakes!! :'( :'(

how about putting a fire under the @ss of these people? >:(

i carry heavy pieces of wood in my car due to 'road kill' that hasn't been fortunate enough to die quickly. i had to end the suffering of a opossum last night; hit by a car, its innards were all out, and still alive and suffering beyond imagination.

an animal in pain will be dangerous but that's the point of a fire arm. you don't have to walk up and put the freakin bullet into it.

My old man had a story about when he worked up at Brittania Mines back in the 30's seems the lads went into the nearest town hit the beer parlour got all pissed up and started home along along the road and met a Moose in the middle of the road where upon the driver said move Moose, and honked the horn repeatedly, the Moose thought he was being challenged and trashed the logging truck that they were driving in ( the old man said it was a Model T logging truck?), my take on it is that it was an old time truck probably late teens vintage, not what we think of as a logging truck, but still impressive. Yes the silly bastards had to walk home and yes I believe they had to pay for the truck. It's tragic about the poor thing not being put out it's misery, the very least the gov agency should do is explain why.

i hate to see a critter suffer too, this would actually be something the bunny huggers could actually make themselves useful.

I had a deer with a broken front leg out in my yard a couple of months ago. It was really sad, he was limping around with his foreleg flopping about. (sorry for that image.)
It's technically legal to shoot where I live but it wasn't deer season yet and I didn't want to pizz off my neighbors so I called the sheriff's office and they said they could send out someone to "legally" dispatch the deer but I'd have to dispose of the carcass.
I was like, so what's in it for me?

Anyway, the deer wandered off and I figured nature would take it's course but no, about two weeks later I see the same deer out in my yard again. I won't describe what his leg looked like but it was pretty horrible.
He again disappeared this time for good.

There are zillions of deer here where I live. I see at least one "on the road" every day.
I found a dead one in my creek right in front of my house a couple of weeks ago. I guess it got hit, I couldn't tell.
I had to drag the carcass out of the 15 foot deep ditch and down to the edge of the property. I damn sure wasn't digging a hole.  Thank goodness I didn't need a tractor!
I was surprised that it only took about 4 days for the vultures and coyotes to reduce the carcass to bones.

I see moose on a weekly basis.  At the University I go to there is a cow and a calf that linger around the arts building stare into the pottery room windows. When the moose are around the smart people wait for them to pass.  Out of 1000 moose encounters I have had, only one got crazy.  A three year old bull chased my ass into a stand of trees while I was playing a game of golf, the bastard nearly got me.  Later that summer fish and game killed his ass for being a nuisance and for not moving on to higher ground.  The uglier the animal the tastier in my opinion
I farted and made my son cry.

During the 1985 Iditarod Sled dog race....

Susan butcher tangled with a Pregnant Moose.

Result: 2 Dogs dead 13 injured. The moose was shot by another Musher. Probably saving Butchers life.
