Vista is like the new Windows ME :D

By which I mean it was rushed out as a replacement to a fairly stable OS, didn't provide much in the way of real upgrades, and was pushed to market even though a better version was already i the works.

Can't comment on Windows 7 directly because, just like all other Microsoft OSs, I'll be waiting for SP1 before upgrading.

I've used it for abouy 6 months, when I need to use windows (use linux primarily) and find it quite good.
Vast improvement over Vista, and seem more backward-compatible than any other OS ever released (except linux...).

Remember that Windows7 is designed to protect you from all the security issues that P2P networking and filesharing programs like limewire expose your computer to, mostly due to the fact that about 1 in 20 files on limewire and similar 'services' are infected with viruses and malware, and the opened ports that limewire creates causes vulnerability.
It's not a wonder it may not work properly with Windows7 unless you disable some important security features.

Suggestion: Move to using bit torrents. Still not perfect, but safer, for illegaly sharing copyrighted materials :)
No.

vuse (torrent software)  and windows 7 work flawlessly together .. i just upgraded 2 weeks ago (from vista) and it solid as a rock

pros:
-faster boot times
-it writes waaaaay faster (from one hard drive to another)
-it's a little prettier (i had home basic, witch didn't have windows Aero.. so i'm not not sure how much of that prettiness carried over from Aero)

cons:
-you have to completely delete itunes and re-download it and start fresh (LAME)
-the backup files are HUGE, zipped or not .. your gonna need at least 200gigs just for backup
-they removed alot of software (no picture editing ,no movie maker)  and made them downloads
that last one could be a pro, cuz the downloads are free , so if it's software you don't use... it's no loss

We use XP, Vista and soon Win 7 at my house.  I preffer XP (it's more for the engineering type which I am), my twin boys have used Vista for over 2 years with no issues (running all the app's and games they want).  My 14 yo boy and my wife will be getting new laptops with Win 7 for xmas.

I've used Windows 7 for a few months now and I don't mind it. I got it early because of my MSDN:AA account. The only problem I have had is with my sound card. Creative is getting off to a slow start in the Windows 7 game. Overall though I am impressed, it was a much more streamlined launch than Vista. However I have never understood the anti Vista movement. Yes it was buggy at launch and yes many of these issues were not resolved until after SP1. However after SP1 it was smooth sailing. Much better driver support, much better software support, improved performance, an overall huge upgrade. However its those misconceptions that it was a horrible OS that kept people from moving to it.

Diving into the world of System Admin I have a new love for the simplicity and complexity of Linux. However this is a point and click world dominated by Microsoft. Not because it is a superior OS, which is a matter of opinion anyway, but because it is the social norm and because Microsoft has contracts with many hardware vendors, really limiting other OS's from getting a larger market share.

Yeah this subject again which is nothing more than personal opinion. So here is mine.
I use windows for 1 reason. flexibility. NOTHING is more flexible then windows and that is a fact. For example, I have a MUCH vaster array of software to choose from then either linux of mac. Free or pay. I can also choose what hardware I want, unlike mac. I can set up my windows machine in anyway I want, I can make it look like osx if I wanted to go backwards.
Anything you can do on any other system can be done on windows. And truth be told, just as well if a person knows what they are doing, just like any other system.
Virtually any game made can be used on windows. Oh yes I know virtual machines and parallels but then that is adding extra layers and thus reducing performance. I mean if I have to set up windows on parallels of a vm, then why not just use windows.

I have been doing a lot of work on 7. It is every bit as fast as xp. The profile copy software for transferring from an old pc to the new one works very well. It has AWESOME compatibility for older programs and if you have a particularly picky software, you can download the xp tool which takes care of that. It has been very stable and any issues are largely software issues.
7 has also added increased support for active directory. 7 can be installed in under 15 minutes from a usb drive and that is from start to fully usable.

In my opinion, holding out on xp is just being afraid to move on. XP offers nothing that 7 does not have.
7 is awesome, it even manages to be better than vista which contrary to what many like to think, is a very strong system. No it may not be as fast as xp but is bar for more stable. I am on vista right now on an old laptop that never has OS issues. If there is an issue, it is a program and even that is very rare.

The whole vista thing is like the synthetic oil is bad thing. Totally false.

Again, just my opinion just like everyone elses opinion. If someone wants to take issue, be my guest but you will have nothing but your own opinion. Mine works for me and my work very well. now if I irritate someone with this, hey that is awesome! :D At least I am talking from hands on use whereas many talk from what they have heard.

I work at a liberal arts college, we use windows, mac, solaris, and have a little linux floating around. So I get to play with a number of different set up.

Bobby, if i need to torrent something, which is not often, I just google for a torent file that I need. Usually pirate bay or somesuch, then just open it with whatever torrent program I have installed on whichever computer I'm on. It honestly doesn't seem to make a difference which torrent client I use, since I do it all on linux boxes, so I don't have that crapton of animated, hyper-buttoned, flashing and crazy ass bit torrent crap that seems prevalent on windows bit torrent clients.
No.

For those that like to was philosophical about these sorts of thing, the following essay by Neal Stephenson is a good read:
