Trying to get my head around this wiring. It sucks!!

There seems to be a heap of connections that don't seem to match up. The PO had repaired wires over the years and added changed things beyond stock so I dont really know what should go where. The wiring diagrams are a bit of a help but the replacement harness is not exactly matching up. 

One problem I am having is working out what this is? That cylindrical (aluminium) thing behind the coils. It looks factory, has 4 wires out, on the old bike (Brown with red stripe)it went to a red overspeed warning light the other came from a yellow wire that is only in a wrecked handlebar switch mechanism (not yellow with a red stripe) and the other two end up looped into each other. I can see this on any other bikes I have looked at photos of nor in any wiring diagrams. Is it because it is a Japanese bike?

To me it seems like some sort of lighting adapter.   Do you have different signal lights?

If it is the Overspeed light connector, you can just run without it. The Brn/Red went to the middle fuse (lighting) circuit, the others lit the light, set the speed (I think it was a resistive divider?) and provided a ground, IIRC. You can find the wiring diagram for those online, but it's not needed to run the bike.

Is you bike a JDM model? I have a 70 JDM that has the thing mounted on the frame and mine had a small thing that had wires coming out of it between the speedo and the speedo cable. That part is long gone and I do not remember what it looked like.

Yeah thanks guys, I have just got rid of it. I would have kept it but the triple tree that had the hole in it for the speed warming light cracked as the PO did not use the "D" washers in the correct place.

Bit of a shame as that early Japanese stuff was cool. Still have the rear fender and tail light. I will just have to remember not to take it over 100mph ;)

Wow, complicated. A resistive divider?
I worked on a Japanese domestic bike that had this warning light but it wired directly from the speedo, I just assumed it had an internal switch that activated at the "too fast!" speed. That speed was fixed, and every Japanese vehicle had an alarm - a super annoying "ding-dong" doorchime sound in cars and trucks.
