Help Needed: CB360 front drum brakes
« on: November 26, 2009, 04:57:22 PM »
I have a '74 CB360 that I have ready for reassembly but I cannot figure out how to get to the front drum brake pads.  I have the front wheel off but have no help from the Clymer or owners manual on how to get the axle out or drum cover off.  Also, is there anywhere that sell drum brake pads for this model as all the Honda websites show the later models disc brake pads for the 74 or are they same as the rear pads by chance?  Thanks again.

bar through hole on one side of axle and 22mm deep socket or combination wrench on the big nut

Hmmm.....  front wheel is off, but axle is still in?  Must be one of those forks that clamp the axle?

Anyway, remove the axle nut if not already done.

Tap axle out of hub.  Use a block of wood or a plastic mallet to avoid damaging the axle threads.  Or, loosely screw the axle nut back on flush with the end of the axle and tap with an ordinary hammer on the nut itself.  This will allow you to not damage the threads, but obviously will not let the axle all the way out.

Once the axle is out, the brake backing assembly (or, 'drum cover') falls out of the hub.  Or, if the brake / hub / shoes are very badly corroded, they may all be stuck together.  Persuade as necessary per your favorite method.

Replacement of the shoes will then be obvious.

If getting the nut off is the problem, put the screwdriver thru the hole and get the whole thing up on a vice, with that side in the jaws. Then get a cheater bar on the wrench on the nut side.

Or no vice?  reclamp the non-nut side of the axle into one of the fork bottoms where the wheel is off to the side, and the nut end is exposed.

I usually put 'hole' side in vice with soft jaws, plus a bar through hole.
 Then unscrew the nut.

If the front brakes are a twin leading shoe setup they are probably same as CB350K or CL350K models.

I thought all the "cb360"s had disk fronts.

I second the existence of the 74 CB60 with drum brakes on both ends.
I ride one every day. Eventually it will get a disk conversion.

Alright thanks, I got the thing off.  It just took some serious brute force.  I ordered pads off ebay that will supposedly fit but we will see.  I'm completely rebuilt now less parts I'm waiting on (2 carb kits, 1 diaphragm, oil filter spanner, fork seals, brake pads, and exhaust gaskets).
