Would I be crazy to reuse these wheel bearing retainers?
« on: November 28, 2009, 07:24:03 PM »
The previous owners did a hack job of removing the retainers at one time, it was pure sheer will that I got them out. Front is $10 and rear is $20. Would I be crazy to put these back in to save $30? I mean, it is $30.

P.S. The hub bearing had never been opened, so of course it was a cinch.

I dunno about crazy but I'm finiky about that stuff. I'd replace them, any parts bikes  around there?

I think you'd save pulling your hair out if you just throw them away and get new ones.
Also, see if some industrial supply house in your area has a thread "file" to clean out the female threads before you install the new retainers.

In this case......

If you've bought beer in the past few days,

I would say your in good shape to sort yourself out with some new parts.

Get new ones and be grateful they are available.  ;)
Don't scrimp on anything related to the bearings.

If you can clean up the threads on retainer and bore enough so the retainer turns in relatively freely, just re-use them and re-stake them. They don't do that much, and there's enough good threads there to be secure. Go with $30 in beer.

My theory is to replace with OEM whenever possible.  It lets Honda know that there is still a market for this stuff.  They will of course stop making them some day, but by the time I need them again, my bike will be 60+ years old and it will be my grand kids problem  ;D
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.
