motorcycle wireless intercoms
« on: December 02, 2009, 03:07:44 PM »
i'm looking into some communication system alternatives for two separate riders to use. ive noticed a bunch of options; two way radios with voice activation, cellphone with headset, blue tooth device... or a CB with a big whip antenna would be pretty cool  ;D. anyone have a system that works well that they would recommend? under $200

Generally those are priced perty high.  When you say two separate riders, I imagine you mean two bikes, two drivers.  Even the plug-in types for two riders on one bike can be steep as well. The 5 pin headsets I have were $60 bucks a piece and that is on the low end.  That's not counting what it needs to plug into and then the accessories...
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

You've set your cost guidelines a bit low....for new stuff and (I assume) two riders. Probably the cheapest you will find is a Chatterbox with helmet speakers and mic. It can be mounted on the side of your helmet or remotely with a cable to your helmet. Reliable range is a mile or so in open areas...less in the city.

Most of the comm units have voice activation, but they are tricky to get working right as engine and wind noise tends to trip them. I gave up and just use push-to-talk.

My setup has a Zumo GPS and Chatterbox mounted on a ram mount connected to the helmet with a cable. The Zumo has XM radio and MP3 which turned low I think is safe enough.  ::)

Some states have restrictions on the use of speakers in helmets.....might want to check that.

Zumo GPS.... wow, expensive but cool stuff. but alas, i am a man on a budget and try to find a cheaper way of going about things. something like this maybe http://www.electotronics.com/cardosystemssrso012scala-ridertmwirelessmotorcyclehelmetheadsetforbluetoothrcellphones.aspx
or

there doesnt seem to be a meet in the middle price for this stuff. i'm going to have my cellphone on me anyway. the only problem i can foresee with useing a cellphone headset is wind and engine noise
