choke plates
« on: November 30, 2009, 04:21:38 PM »
I reassembled the carbs on my 1978 cb750f after a good cleaning (they had been setting since 1986).  The manual says to use new screws in the choke plates but those seem to be hard to find, so I used the originals with a drop of blue locktite on each one.  Does that sound OK or will there someday be a small screw sucked into the intake?  Is there a way to peen the end of each screw?  Thanks.

Loctite 242 (this is probably the blue stuff you have) is supposed to be fuel-proof. They also make a special locker for fasteners smaller than 1/4 inch (#222) but it just seems to be a weaker version. I would be OK with the loctite, I used it in the last rack I rebuilt but I installed new button head allen screws - the original ones were in pretty bad shape after screwing them out with the way Keihin locked them in. The original screws are not available, they have a hole in the thread end to allow a tool to flare the end after assembly. I don't know of any reasonable way to peen the end of a normal screw once the plate is installed in the carb throat. I haven't used that rack yet though...

Thanks Bodi.  I feel better about the locktite.  Where did you find the allen head screws that small?
