What are UBS Bolts?
« on: November 30, 2009, 02:52:24 PM »
What are UBS Bolts? I'm rebuilding my CB400F engine, and I'd like to replace most of the case bolts, but aside from having a hard time finding M6 flange bolts longer than 40mm, I wonder what the UBS bolts that I see on the parts fiches are.

I'm curious about the Terminology as well.... Google is not my friend at the moment as I can find no positive definitions.

Uniform Bearing Stress.
It's generally a term used for bolts that need to be accurately torqued.

Thank you very much..........I got pissed at google and gave up searching for the proper definition.  I just found this on google books,

http://books.google.com/books?id=_PgDAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA86&lpg=PA86&dq=%22Uniform+Bearing+Stress%22+UBS+Bolts&source=bl&ots=MvtsClwE07&sig=YrVPKV7lFeHb7K49vkuFm_PtBWM&hl=en&ei=D3MUS4OqEI7clAeygrW-BQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CAoQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=%22Uniform%20Bearing%20Stress%22%20UBS%20Bolts&f=false

References Honda using "UBS" bolts at critical points.

It's silly, but that was REALLY driving me crazy that I couldn't find a good definition for "UBS"  ::)

Cheers, Joe

Ok, I have to admit I had to look it up as well but I had a pretty good idea of what "UBS" referred to in relation to the bolts, i.e. I knew those case bolts have to be torqued and I've had experience with other torqued fasteners on other engines.  ;)
Either way, now we all know!  :)

Interesting...

So how necessary are the UBS bolts? Can't I just torque a regular grade 8.8 or 10.9 bolt to the proper spec? Or is there something special about the bolts themselves?

I would think they would be a higher tensile bolt.

You might want to have a look at
http://www.vf750fd.com/vf750f/Honda_Common_Service_Manual.pdf
There's a section about fasteners.

Honda says: "UBS bolts are in the high-tension category. They can be recognized by undercuts under their bolt necks. UBS bolts are marked either with or without strength marks. Furthermore, these bolts are so strcutured so they will not easily loosen, by the provision of a slight slope of 5 to 60° on the bottom of the flange." "Used on the critical areas of the engine/frame where a nut cannot be used to tighten. Engine: cylinder, cylinder head. Frame: foot peg, bracket"
