Which honda models could I buy?
« on: December 16, 2009, 03:53:19 AM »
In the quest for my next project and committing to one idea or another, I very quickly came across the limit of my knowledge on the range of Honda models produced. So I was thinking maybe some real Honda experts out there could help me identify whether Honda produced anything like the following bikes and if so what model they would be:

  • a 100cc parallel twin
  • a 150cc triple
  • a 200cc four cylinder
Or, did Honda produce a "motorbike" as a 50cc single other than the Dream 50?

let me have your thoughts. From a project perspective - the more common the model that fits the above the better!

...or thinking about it a 125 parallel twin would do as well.

All Hondas 125 twins were parallel with the exception of a few of the later V twins.
Or did you mean parallel line astern as in a tandem twin like the Rotax two stroke racers?

The 125 twin was made in two designs........the 59-62 versions were known as the Benly Touring, Sport, and SS Racer.  If you can find one........bring $$$.  The later SS125A was produced from 67-69.  It is a very sweet little motor that came with a CV carb. Its an affordable tiddler in the US.

Maybe you want to take a 350 or 400 / 4 and shorten the stroke at the crank, severely shorten the barrels, use modern 'ring-holder' pistons, and build a 250cc 4-cylinder that will scream 16,000+ rpms! Several builders have also played with the CB72 250cc twins by modifiying the cranks and putting early Suzuki DOHC heads on to make them scream. According to a retired HRC engineer, the secret to getting the 250 twin to pull well from corners was to balance the crank at 62% of the rods and pistons' weight. Several cam variants are available, some in the UK. Slipping a standard 6-speed tranny into the cases from a CL360 takes some machining but reportedly works.

Thanks Dennis - man you know your stuff with these old Hondas  ;D
So the SS125 is a parallel twin that shouldbe relatively easy to get hold of without a second mortgage? What I'm thinking of (and this should answer your question Sam) is getting three of these and seeing if I can get in touch with Allen Millyard to help me graft them all together. Sleeving down the barrels a little and before you know it I have a 297cc six cylinder Honda!

It's gotta be possible right?!   :o

Why not just throw 2 400's together for an 800cc V8?

Or is this for a certain racing class?
No.

The Benelli Sei is a Honda 500/4 with a cylinder added to each end of the elongated crank. They copied the 500 so closely that some internal engine parts and the carb kits are interchangable.

Regarding the 125 twins.............I watched a motor or two trade hands last summer for less than $150 each.  Whole bikes occasionally show up for $500.

There were a couple of different iterations of the 50.

Honda played around for racing.  I think there was a 250-Four and a 350 six?  Can't remember exactly now... Few mortals could afford the surviving examples, though.

If it can be done, he'd be the one to forsee any hidden difficulties and work around them. His reputation precedes him.

It's gotta be possible wrong!!   :D

All the Honda twins of the period and you only have to look at your own, have end mounted (not like front ones as on the 4s) spark plugs with not a cat in hell's chance of getting them in any other way, sorry Mi Lord. ;D ;D ;D
next question :D :D :D :D

Yeah - must be possible. weld up the old plug hole and make a new one, just like when twin plugging? Gotta be possible or like Alan says - just make a new head. You give up too easy Sam  ;)

All you have to do is turn the head around so the plug points the direction you want it to.
They make cool ashetrays, too.
