Removing valve cover on a 750K
« on: December 22, 2005, 06:49:25 PM »
While boneyard searching for my 550, I came across a "maximized" 750. Chrome covers, polished forks, chrome brake slave cylinder and line, etc. I couldn't let it sit there, so I have all of the covers and mounts. I can't seem to get the valve cover off (it was 17 degrees) and don't want to scratch the chrome. Is it just a matter of "shocking" it to free it? Will it then slide out?

75o's are everywhere, not many 550's. I guess I should have bought the one I posted about last week.

It will come off if you cut off the 2 frame rails right above it. Otherwise you'll have to pull the engine.

I had my battery sawzall with me, but didn't want to cut it as it was an early one, '70 or '71. On the other hand, it will rot there. On the third hand, it is $40.00 for the whole thing.

buy the whole thing, take it to your garage where it is warmer and then strip it. But the cb750 chrome stuff won't fit on your 550.

I know, but I am a sucker for anything made of metal that shines, turns, or tries to get away; and is cheap. It will probably just go into my stockpile of things "I may need some day".

I probably will take the whole thing. The wheel chrome is perfect, the forks are polished and it has a Shoei fairing.

Same here. You know, You could modify the frame and stuff the 750 into the 550! Hey it could be a project down the road or something.

I have a 750 that had the crome treatment and it is a mess. I am going to have to grind all that flaking crome and I don't look forward to it. I do not think there is any other way.

What condition is the crome in on the bike at the wreckers? I would be interested in it.  I think that I would rather just replace then grind.

Thanks, Ron

Thanks for the offer, but for just now, I think I would rather hang on to it.

Chrome plating and aluminum really weren't meant to be together.

Not a good idea to grind off the chrome as you will just end up with a mess! better to take the covers to a chrome plater and get them to remove the chrome, all they do is reverse the chrome plating process.
