Exhaust Header touching frame - CB500 w/pic

I have a 71 CB500 with the original exhaust. Its new to me. I suspect the original exhaust was put back on to sell it and I have not had the bike very long.

While cleaning up the pipes to put it away for the winter I noticed the right side lower is tight up against the frame tube near the bend around the bottom.

Is this normal? Wont I rub a whole in it?

Any tips on refitting it?

Is it the header or the muffler touching?  Either way, I don't think the pipes should be in contact with the frame.  Maybe the pipes are tweeked.

Yup, that's abnormal.

Try loosening the clamps and mounting bolts, see if it can be pulled back in to place.  Sometimes improper installation can cause things like this.

yep its the header, seems to follow the frame down and under.

how much finagling can the pipes endure?

Someone had that a while back, actually had the pipe on the wrong side of frame or the mount?.. are you sure it routed right?

are you saying that left was put on a right or that it was just routed the wrong way?

been checking out photos of others, the right lower doesnt come near the frame, mine is definately up tight on the frame at the bend.

so i should loosen it all off and try to reroute it to the inside of the frame.....

If I remember, he had put one pipe on the wrong side of the sidestand mount..

took a photo and since I removed a very wide engine guard I think what has happened is that the PO had bent/jogged the exhaust outwards to clear the hardware.

Can I bend the header back you think? Is there a method I could use to reduce the risk of ruining the pipe?

Any tips appreciated.

would swapping pipes #3 and #4 solve the problem?

i had a similar issue with my bike.  i lossened up the pipes at the head and the collector.  then i twisted/rotated the collector. when everything had clearance, i locked it all back down.

what does your set up look like at the collector?
