4 years and counting on a set I soaked for my sons K3 750 that started out near rock hard. I soaked them in a mix of wintergreen and xylene, first try had no affect so I got each one nice and hot (not burning hot) with a heat gun then dropped them in and let soak for 24 hrs then let air dry. Pre heating the boots with the heat gun did the trick. New carb boots are still the preferred option in my own opinion but my kid was on a tight budget and the wintergreen trick did work at least for us.

And I do have a bottle of peanut oil to try on the airbox of my F2, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Did the peanut oil treatment on one airbox.  Preferred Mothers "Back to Black" treatment.
....and it doesnt attract nesting squirrels  ;D

Counterpoint: Did peanut oil on all the black plastic trim on my R1200GS and 6 months later it still looks excellent. I will use it first from here on out.

Ahha, I didn't think of that.  :o
I guess I should note that anyone considering the wintergreen trick should know that their bike is going to smell something like Wrigley's Spearmint gum for quite a while.

For my air box I just washer it and hit it with a heat gun. Brought back the nice blackness.

I tested a 750 K0 inlet rubber by soaking  in Tri-Aryl phosphate ester (Reofos 50) at 70 degrees Centigrade (it is a plasticizer for Nitrile Rubber / PVC ). It softened up Ok - that was about 4 months ago. Will have to check its pliability again. It is still in the boot (trunk to non- 'Limeys'  ;D) of my car ! This plasticizer is flame retardant too.

Have not tried the airbox rubber yet - my analysis was that it was not nitrile rubber but a form of PVC (this is an early K0 about 3000 later than Sandcast with the crappy styrene resin Airbox)  -  airbox replaced with LPM PU one - which is great.

UPDATE ... Well this treatment was 4 YEARS ago and the CB750K0 inlet rubber part is still as soft and pliable.  as when first treated. It maintains its elasticity too.

Reviving this thread.

I bought new airbox boots, but the shop lost them. I was thinking about this discussion and I might try to bring my old boots back to life. Bumping this thread might help some other folks as well.

I went ahead and ordered Methyl Salicylate on ebay. I have a problem with the principle of buying the same part twice within a matter of months.

If the shop lost them why aren't they buying you replacements?
