Hi Temp Paint
« on: November 17, 2009, 07:23:53 AM »
Hey!

I'm thinking about coating my pipes with a high temp black spray paint.  I know this is pretty common.  I was just wondering how it has worked out for other people and if there is a preference of one paint over the other.

Duplicolor and VHT are owned by the same company. Their flame proof products work great.
They also have a very informative website. Twice I have asked a tech question and both times they have gotten back to me within 24hrs.

The key is to follow their directions printed on the can.

Rustoleum has engine paint and 2000 degree header paint. I've used barbecue paint from hardware too.

Sand the pipe, scratch it up to give the paint something to cling to, degrease with acetone or similar, don't touchthe prepared pipe with your hands (oils) and spray. Do it again next year.  ;)

pay the extra for the 2000 degree paint. its a few bucks more, but has not given a problem yet.

I went for the bbq dollar can at wally world, and it flaked after 3 weeks. I then bought the 1200 degree dupli color and it held up better, but still came off at the bends right off the engine.

The 2000 degree ceramic ultra high heat has held up for 6 months and still looks great! Follow the curing directions and it will last!

If you are going to use VHT be sure to get primer as well.  I used the white primer and white paint on my pipes and it has held up pretty well.  My Full 4 into 1 yoshi style pipes took one can of primer and 2 cans of paint to get nice coverage.  Like everyone has said be sure to prep well.

Good luck and post some pics!

i used krylon bbq/stove paint on my kerker... says 1200. has a nice semigloss look too. but it turned flat for the first 2-3 inches of head pipe. other than that its pretty durable, no primer just sanding and about 8-10 coats... total cost... $4.98 u.s.  huge difference, came out pretty clean. best part is, you f it up, just scuff and paint...
