NEW YORK - A Maryland groom has created a viral storm after he interrupted his wedding last month to update his Facebook and Twitter accounts from the altar.

Dana Hanna, who works for a pet Web site, also posted a short video of the ceremony on the Internet. It showed him reaching into his pocket for his phone as the minister was about to pronounce the couple husband and wife.

The video has had more than 350,000 views.

"Oh, Dana is updating his relationship status on Facebook," the minister said as the audience at the wedding laughed.

After Hanna finished twittering he continued the ceremony.

"As I was saying, I now pronounce you husband and wife. It's now official on Facebook. It's official in my book. Dana you may kiss your bride."

Hanna, who lists his profession on the networking site LinkedIn as chief architect at Next Day Pets, described his reaction to the ceremony on his YouTube account the day after the ceremony.

"I surprised not only my guests, but also Tracy (his wife) by pulling out my phone and posting on Facebook and Twitter from the altar during out wedding," he said.

Though users have sent marriage proposals over the micro-blogging site Twitter, interrupting a wedding ceremony to update social networking site Facebook and send out a tweet on Twitter about it appears to be a first.

"I had her phone ready in my pocket, so when she asked for it I could hand it to her. No one knew about this except the minister and myself." he said on YouTube.

The Twitter post, which has garnered Hanna instant online fame, is still up on his account.

"Standing at the altar with @TracyPage where just a second ago, she became my wife! Gotta go, time to kiss my bride. #weddingday 1:48 PM Nov 21st from Twittelator."

Yesterday, apparently overwhelmed by media attention, Hanna posted a new comment on his Twitter account.

"To all the criticizers of my video out there questioning my sanity: You don't get it. I was having fun at MY wedding! Loosen up, have fun!"

His new bride, apparently also surprised at the viral storm her husband launched, also posted on her Twitter account.

"Can't sleep, very anxious about this new fame. What will become of it?" she asked.

this guy sounds like an attention whore. its amazing how many people are making facebook a part of their daily lives. running through the updates on my facebook now and then i see everything from... bored facebooking at work right now to, driving down the highway and almost hit a deer a second ago

I don't get the obsession with social networking and the internet. I got on myspace for like a month, got bored and deleted it. I don't have a facebook page, have never visited twitter. What ever happened to the good old days of actual social interaction, where if you wanted to talk to somebody you called them? If you happened to be in the neighborhood you just rang the doorbell to see if they were home. I see thirteen year old kids with cell phones and think "Now what in the hell do you need a cell phone for?". I even saw a group of for kids walking down the street one day, all listening to iPods and texting on their phones. Why even hang out with friends if you're going to spend all your time staring at glowing quadrangles?

We have a whole new breed of humans who wont have a clue what the real world is like.
Remember years ago when some dodgy phsyco-babble drs were taking people back to their childhood and making them as adults crawl around the floor?

Even more so growing up in the 50's and 60's.  We learned the world did not revolve around us.  But be sort of nice to them as they will be the ones caring for us in the old folks home.

i agree, i dont get why people have to be connected all the damn time. when i was a kid i didnt need a cellphone because i always told my folks where i was going, who i was going with and god help me if i didnt get home when i said i would. i hate telephones, the only time i carry my cell phone is if i'm traveling out of town in the car or when i ride the 750. i knew that when the streetlights came on i needed to get home and ANY parent in the neighborhood could yell at any kid, we all respected and minded adults. i'm still a big fan of corporal punishment (spanking) not beating a kid. when i was a kid and i acted out in public (VERY rarely) my mom didnt hesitate to whack me across my tuchis, and i believe i'm a better person for it.

I think that sums it up. It was HIS wedding, not yours. Just because your wedding was crusty and boring doesn't mean his had to be.

Re. Hanna and anyone who finds this behavior acceptable...What a complete jackass!! This kind of idiotic behavior is what's taking us to hell in a plastic hand basket. I don't even believe in the type of ceremony they were involved in BUT I do believe in civility and and respect. What has happened in the US? All you need to do in order to achieve some degree of notoriety is to be some type of buffoon or jackass? Puhlease...

If this sounds familiar , at all in any way , even slightly...
then aren't we all a little guilty of "technological superiority?"
Like it's Ok for us to use this technology for the purposes that make us happy, but not for others to do so?  maybe? 
Believe it or not but there are some very strange folk out there that think a parts manual/ and parts numbers are more nerdy than being a Trekker...( I only found out the other day that folk who are in to star trek big time Do Not like being called Trekees but adopt the term trekker out of choice...well  how was I to know that? Being usually lost in my parts manual)
Facebook does indeed seem pointless to most of us..( and I for one personally like to call it faceF***book in a derisive way)
But, maybe we should just feel sorry for these folk and try and convert them into getting a life into the joys of cb750 restorations instead?

What would your Idea of a perfect day be? I would guess many different things for as many different folks out there??
OK, How many of you would include in your perfect day this; At some point in your "perfect day" you wish to stand around for Over three hours having photos taken..
This is what happened at my cousins wedding, her "perfect day" thousands spent and months of planning...Traditional wedding to the max.
Even my ever patient mam was starting to lose it.
And why?
Because Photographers are frightened to death of getting sued if they don't come up with the "perfect pictures from a perfect day"
So frightened in fact they end up ruining the day thus making it imperfect..
Not that you could plan a perfect day and expect perfection....or pay for it , the world don't work like that.
Me and me misses marriage;
She wouldn't marry me unless I wore me leather and para boots..(photos to prove)
Cost; £30. for registry office. £20. for a crate of cider and folk that came used their dealers recomendations their own discretion on what to bring.
What made it perfect?
Low cost, my friend that held me dog outside misses, some very wasted friends, and Janine nine months pregnant bursting through the door just as the Head honcho was saying "If anybody has any just cause or impediment..." saying "sorry I'm late" (but pointing to her pocket and miming the words "but i have got the you know what"
And fourteen years later we are still begging for bj's together.
