i looked at oregon myself when thinking about where i wanted to move to. i understand the cost of living is pretty high there though.

I have fond memories of Astoria, having stopped there on a cross country bicycle trip in '74. I met some people who gave me a place to stay and a pick up truck to use in exchange for working on their house and cb77. Good luck out there!

Yeah, it was my first pick on my list. I didn't think I would be reporting in ~30 days though! I was hoping to have a little bit more notice to prepare, but I'll take it regardless

Beautiful.  You'll love it.  Good for you!

My flight crew partner is looking to move to Bend with his wife.  Oregon is good country.

I disagree about the cost of living. There is no sales tax in Oregon but the state tax is high, housing and utilities are high.  Between the IRS and the state of Oregon, I was taxed at nearly 30% and I never got a Tax return of more than $100.00.  Astoria and the Oregon coast are very nice.  Are you in the Coast Guard?  If so a housing allowance will take the sting out of your housing cost.  Say hi to sloth and the Goonies for me.

I live in San Francisco CA. so my idea of cost of living is different. I have 2 friends that bought a house in Bend for 200g. Hear in SF you cant buy anything for 200g.

Yes, I'm in the Coast Guard. I'm still claiming AL residency, so I don't know how the income taxes compare to OR. Yea the housing allowance helps, but I'm actually taking a $300 cut in housing allowance moving from NC. Which really doesn't make any sense, because Elizabeth City, NC is the lowest cost of living in the Coast guard  ???

Oregon will get "their" money from you.  One way or another.

If you like low clouds, fog and rain most of the time, Astoria is the place to be.

I grew up in the wettest place in the contiguous United States.  I grew up with constant hurricanes. I lived in the grey/snow of new england. Weather doesn't really affect me much anymore.

Welcome to Oregon.  I have lived here all my life and love it.  It has a little bit of everything although it would be nice to have a longer riding season.  :(

Welcome to OR!! I moved here from PA a few years ago. The cost of living is higher in some areas (near cities) but most are very reasonable. It does tend to rain a lot through the winter so everything stays very green. It's really pretty compared to a lot of places. The ocean is cold as #$%* all year long though. Pack your waterproof wool knickers.  ;D

Unless it's biting cold, icy or snow covered, which doesn't happen that often, I ride all year long. It is drop dead gorgeous out here. Riding through the temperate rain forest on the way to the coast with the cedars surrounding you and the moss hanging, everything brilliant green all year 'round... WOW.

FYI: You'll be close to the WA state line so when buying something over there, show them your OR license and they should not charge the sales tax.  8)

Bend is very nice. It's the high desert so it stays cooler in summer and warmer in winter than many places out here. It is rather dry though. If dry works for ya, great. I have a hard time visiting for more than a few days because my skin and lungs are too sensitive to the dry air.

I looked it up... the income tax is 9% here if you make over $7600. I would rather live and work in WA. They don't have income tax but they do have sales tax at 6%. I'd rather pay 6% of a tiny bit of my income than 9% on all of it.

I'll definitely be keeping my AL residency. I'm only at 4% income tax with that.
