Swapping original MC for Sport Bike MC
« on: December 04, 2009, 08:11:16 PM »
Im thinking about chaning the original master cylinder on my CB500 for a newer style like seen on sportbikes (see picture). This bike is a cafe build for me. Has anybody done this to a 500/550? One thing im concerned about is if this will effect the brakelight switch at all?

If your 500's brake switch is like my 750's, it's pressure activated. Meaning: the new M/C won't affect it at all. It's a common upgrade, especially if one is moving to a twin front disc brake upgrade.

Lots of places sell good ones. You might check mikesxs.com

Cheers!

thats what I like to hear! I searched ebay a little and it looks like they are pretty moderately priced. My front brakes on the bike need a rebuild anyways, so I might as well upgrade at the same time. The ones they use on sportbikes look like theyre pretty good quality, and I think it might match the stock mc as far as size/lever placement if I went with one from a cbr or something.

For those of you that have done the swap, what did you source it from? Im wondering if it has to be from a Honda/cbr etc. or maybe from a Gsxr? Im wondering about using my original lever with an MC from a Gsxr or something else. Will it work?

from what i remember reading, i believe people use gl100? m/c for the dual disc conversion.

search dual disc brake, new master cylinder, and things of that sort. there is a TON of info on this site.

I used the Nissin Master Cylinder off a 01 Kawasaki ZX6 and it worked out quite well. I mounted the reservoir with a 7/8 inch bar clamp and it was a straight swap. Replaced the brake lines with goodridge steel braided while doing the upgrade and the end results were well worth the time and minimal investment. The Nissin levers go for 140 online but were used on the ZX6, ZZR600, and tons of other sport bikes and can be found for super cheap (under 20 bucks) on ebay in good shape.

Sounds like you got a great deal! how is the spacing on the New MC? I mean, does it match how far the the clutch handle bracket sticks forward? (does that make sense?) To put it another way, do both of you levers match how far away they are from the handlebars? Thats something im concerned about before I do the swap.

i have a nissin 14mm MC, i think it was originally on a gsxr750. that MC with the braided stainless lines has given me more brakes than i need with the tires i have on it now.

Are you using the original gsxr brake lever or the original from your bike?
