Hello, I'm Tip-top Daddy
« on: December 05, 2009, 06:21:12 AM »
Mind you, that's not my Christian name.  My real name is Eric Kinsey.  I live in Indianapolis.  I work in the financial industry.  I have two kids.  I'm divorced but I have an awesome girlfriend.  I play music (sing, write, guitar, drums, DJ), old country, garage, glam, punk, rockabilly, etc.  I am a sometimes writer for Greasy Kulture and International Tattoo Art.  I blog at http://tiptopoftheworld.blogspot.com/.  What else...ok, that's about it.

Now let's talk about sickles!

I currently have two:

A '66 BSA Lightning chopper project in a rigid frame with a 71 CB750 front end.

A '73 Honda CB750 bored out to (I was told) 1000cc, 4-into-1 exhaust and K&N filters.

The BSA has been one challenge after another, one step forward and two steps back for years.  I bought the Honda just to have something to ride over the summer.  I'd always wanted a cb750.  It was on a used car lot in a small town.  The price was right at $850 with a good title.  It's pretty much a stocker.  But it is reliable, no muss, no fuss and I dig it mucho.  Other than replacing some fouled plugs I havent had any problems, knock on wood.

Over the winter I'd like to do some mild performance and cosmetic upgrades:
Replace rear tire with Dunlop TT100
Clubman bars
Replace tired old stock seat with a new tandem/race type
Swap stock turn signals for HD style bullets
Pull off heads and inspect them to determine actual displacement
Based on that consider possiblely rejetting carbs and/or a Dyna ignition

Long term plans include
New paint (basic black or Banana Splits inspired pop-psych heavy flake, undecided)
New rear shocks
Dresda type swing arm (Either one of Carpys or have a custom alloy one fabbed up)
Dual disc front end
Lots of lightening holes

I'm going for something akin to Carpy's "Stocker To Rocker",  but more street custom style with just a hint of CR750 competition flavor.  In other words, a cool looking one off old bike that doesnt get eaten alive by my crotch rocket riding buddys.  Improved handling, great looks and hopped up to maybe 80hp.

I'm so glad I found this forum.

HOWDY!  Let's be special friends!!!

Welcome to the board, Eric!

Got any pics of your bikes?  We like pics here :)

Your bike is probably not bored to 1 liter, going that big requires some extra work.  836 kits are very common though, and various means will get you into the 900cc range.   If the bike has no other externally apparent mods such as forced induction, upgraded carbs, upgraded ignition, etc, then I'd bet it was an 836 kit.

When you crack you motor open, check out the cam too.  If the engine has been upgraded then it probably has an aftermarket cam.

Don't expect to not get eaten alive by the crotch rockets, btw, but you can sure force them to eat you slowly!  :)

cheers

I'm actually at work now. ::) So, I'll have to update my pics when I get home.

I concur on the displacement.  It's most likely 836cc.  It leaks oil around the head gasket which is the only real clue leading me to think it might actually be a bigger bore.  The exhaust is really dirty, lots of soot in the tailpipe and the #2/3 pipes are slow to warm up.  Not sure yet if it's ignition or carburetion.  I suppose I will find out when I tear into it after Christmas.

I get eaten alive by my buddies on XS650 choppers, let alone RC-51s and Ducatis.  Suffice to say, I'm not getting anything close to approaching maximum performance.  But if my bike could shed a few pounds and put some more pep in its step I'd be happy.

From what I've read it's hard to squeeze ponies out of the SOHC4 motor.  I'd be interested to find out what mods other guys have done and what works the best.
