Spoke kit problem...
« on: September 23, 2019, 02:27:51 AM »
Just started lacing up a CB750 front wheel and immediately ran into an issue with the inner spokes.

The bend is too short and will not allow the inner spokes to meet up with the holes in the rim unless considerable sideways tension/bend is put on them.
The spoke kit is from David Silver Spares and I have contacted them to hear if they have run into this issue before.
The outer spokes in the kit are fine.

I used their kit for the rear wheel also, and it laced up just fine.

So my question is if anyone over here has had the same problem with their kit, and if so what the solution/explanation was?

Here's a couple of pics, the last one shows a comparison of the spoke angle of a kit spoke and a stock spoke...

Did you try the offending spokes the other way (using them as an outer) , just to see how they fit?

The outer spokes are fine, and they fit perfectly the way they should.
Fitting inner spokes as outers is not even close to working.

A touchup with the die grinder took care of the clearance issue.
It should not be necessery but it solved the problem.
Moving on...

Yes, I e-mailed them and got the usual answer "We have sold lots of these kits and never heard anyone complain before".

In my kit the problem wasnt the outer spokes, it was the inners that had a slightly too short bent part.
That gave rise to the problem seen in the pics above.

Since they didnt ackowledge the problem, and the purchase was done over a year earlier, I decided to push on and solved the problem by grinding away 0.5mm on the inside of the hub where the inner spoke and the hub interfered.
Should not be needed, but like I said I needed to push on...
