Will 78F Comstar wheels mount directly on a 76F?
« on: December 07, 2009, 10:40:19 AM »
Searched through the posts, couldn't find this one.

Will a pair of 78 F comstar wheels bolt up directly on my 76 F1?

The rotor bolt pattern on the front looks the same, wondered if the other dimensions are the same.  Would hate to spend the money, even if they are under $100 shipped, and find that they won't work without major modifications.

Thanks,
Holubs

Do you know what modifications would need to be made to make them bolt up?

The Comstar wheels are different in that the rotors, especially on the front, are made to fit the calipers that were used on the '78 model, which were placed at the back-side of the forks, and the offset of the rotor to the flange were quite different too.  That means that you will most likely have to use the forks from the '78 as well.  The rotors from the '76F have 6 bolts, the comstars have 5, and are not interchangeable.  Probably similar problems exist with the rear wheel.  If you wanted to switch to the Comstars, you'll need the forks and swingarm and all 3 calipers from the '78, or you have a ton of fabrication work staring you in the face.

Thanks for the information.

That sucks, I like the looks of the Comstar wheels but don't want to do a ton of fabrication (or cobbling up) to make them work.
