yes? take a look at this diagram for a petcock:

http://www.golanproducts.com/petcock-diagram.html

its for Harley based custom bikes, could you make something like it for us SOHC4 types? I'd pay good money for one that fit my 78 550K. I suppose I could have my tank modified to accept one of these.

G'Day Guys, well actually Kelvin, I make the COOLEST adapters, ha ha! Pingel has been making high flow petcocks for years, these ones are VERY much like Pingels, coincidence eh? ( ;))

You only need an adapter to fit one to your tank, find one you like and i'll make you an adapter, no worries! I'm gonna order one for my Suzuki GS1000S, the stoopid OEM vacuum petcock #$%*s me to tears! Cheers, Terry. ;D

CB Junkie, they're about $80-$90. And, yeah Terry, Golan and Pingel were suing each other over the design and other issues. Golan didn't start producing their version until Pingel's patent expired. Great design, though.

Terry, how would that adapter work? Step up/step down piece out of brass? thread it onto the existing tank threads and screw the petcock into the adaptor? That about right? I might run into space problems as it's quite crowded under the tank of a 550. I'll take some measurements.

Hey Guys,
Why reinvent the wheel? Pingel sells the adapter, I have a pingel petcock on my CB400F (1975).

Kevin;

Do you happen to know the specs and/or part numbers for the adaptor and valve?

Hey Guys,
Why reinvent the wheel? Pingel sells the adapter, I have a pingel petcock on my CB400F (1975).
The threads on that adaptor aren't metric(for the tank side). A adaptor with pipe thread(for the Pingel) and metric thread(for the tank bung) would fit much better.

Do you know what the thread pitch is on your tank and the size of the threads? On the '75 CB400F the tank has a 20 mm thread with a 1.5 pitch (I think). Anyway the Pingel part # to adapt to their petcock is A2000C.
Hope this helps.

Kevin;
I talked to a guy at Pingel. The smallest adaptor they make, or that can be used is 18mm thread, the 550K has 15mm thread. That having been said, they do sell a tank bung, which you have welded on/in, it's 22mm and you can use any Harley compatible petcock you want. The bung is about $6.00(US), but you have to have it welded on to the tank after you cut away the old threaded piece. Got to make sure I have room for it ... and that I can find someone willing to weld on a fuel tank. ... wonder if JB weld would work.

Hey Kelvin,
That's too bad that your tank has that tiny little tap........your motor must be starving.

 Pingel does sell a 20 mm adapter, here is the URL to there web site and it lists the A2000C ( the one that works for the '75 / '76 CB400F tank ). http://www.pingelonline.com/adapter_nuts.htm

I am sure you are joking about the JB Weld, aren't you?

Good luck,
Kevin

JB Weld ... yeah, I was kidding. I think I'll figure out which Pingel fuel valve I want and then get the bung that's designed for it. A friend of mine's son is a pretty good welder, maybe I can talk him into welding the bung in place once I've prepped the tank.

Oh, can I buy you a consonant?

If your tank has the threaded "spiggot" that your petcock normally screws on to, someone as smart as Kevin could easily make you an internal/externally threaded "collar" style adapter to accept the 20mm internal threaded petcock? the adapter would just thread over the 15mm OEM item, then allow the petcock to thread onto it? No welding to explode your tank or mess up your paint, and no space issues, either. Piece-o-cake mate, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. (Seat-of-the-pants Engineering  ;D)

Terry;

Yeah, the tank has a 15mm threaded "spigot" or whatever you want to call it. I should measure the internal dimension of that stub so I could find out if there is room for a Pingel valve to slip in. making a 22mm thread to fit over a 15mm thread should be doable IF the valve tube will fit in the passage. Anyone have the dimensions of the valve/tube that actually fits up into the tank for the Pingel valve? with the right stock and tap and dies couldn't I make it myself from brass? OR would a thread cutter/lathe be better?

Z1 - these guys are very helpful and the prices are good - i just got a new dyna ignition for 120, the coils are 120 as well..

this link will take you to a petcock page that is for a 1976 F model, but if you look up in the right hand side of the page there is a locator link by bike - it allows you to search for your bike specifically...

they know all about pingel adaptor rings, btw...

G'Day CBJ, thanks for that link, I just ordered a new pingel petcock and adapter for my faithul (but f*cking hard to start) Suzy GS1000S. The OEM "vacuum" tap is a POS! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Terry, I use a new OEM tap on the CB. I had a Pingel years ago but never liked the adaptor for reasons mentioned earlier (crappy fit and problems with seeping) as well as it overpowering the float needles on the CR's I was running at the time. I do, however run a 2 outlet Pingel on my FJ (uses their adator plate) and it works very well. I haven't found fuel starvation problems with the OEM on the CB though I did improve the tank venting system.

Now that's a valid point John, and whats really spooky, knowing my sucess vs failure rate, SOP (seat of pants) backwards, is POS, which describes the results of some of my efforts, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. (SOP/POS Engineering) ;D
