being a saturn driver. i thought i'd join up with a forum, i went to saturnfans.com. i asked some legitimate questions after using the search function and what i got was not how to do it but why in the hell am i doing that? you shouldnt do that, this is what you need to do, and on and on and on and on. these people acted like they thought their #$%* didnt stink ya know? the bull#$%* over there makes the occasional fighting and name calling (even the political threads) sound like little mary sunshine crapping rainbows, those people were that bad. so i guess what i'm saying is I really appreciate everyone here, even the person who is ignoring me, whoever that is.            Yeah, I've heard some say things about there and I can only figure that they haven't been anywhere else and don't realize how much this place has it together. :)

I've experienced that sort of thing over on another site or 2 myself. I'd get like "These bikes were pretty hot, back when , but now you should just feel good to put them together and ride them". It's like "Ho Hum, don't try to make them better or change them up to suit YOU, leave it like it is and go with it!" I had been asking about  fork changes and things like that (if anyone had done anything like that or not). I mean, I think it's cool to have an original, if your bike is not in too bad of a shape, but, when yours is a basket case and you can't afford to put it back original, you just go the route that you CAN swing. ;)

that was another forum i had joined about a year ago, never did get an answer about it. the forum mentioned in this thread is a different one. i've learned to be thick skinned in here but those people were just over the top. i didnt mention this forum so there wont be any bs fallout from it.

the thing is that there actually seems to be some knowledgable people there but their #$%* personalities made it nowhere even close to worth it. so, i will just muddle along with my plans for the saturn and the spare motor i have coming this coming weekend. the car has nearly a half a million miles on it and at some point in time serious mechanical problems have got to start cropping up. the most major work done on this car have been the timing chain replacement every 150k. the spare motor is going to have 9.5 - 1 compression, a 95 - 2000 single cam intake so i'll have multi port fuel injection instead of the throttle body type on the 94 and earlier. that will allow me to put a cold air intake on it (fabricated by me) a little port and chamber work and new valves. stock this 1994 saturn sohc 1.9 had 85 whopping horsepower. i dont want to get stupid with the power, i just want a bit more low-midrange power, enough that when i have the cruise control set at 80-85 it wont have to downshift a gear or 2. i dont rag on this car, it wouldnt have lasted anywhere near as long as it has if i did. i religiously change the oil every 5000 miles, i have never ever used anything but mobil 1 until the last oil change, my new oil of choice is now castrol edge. the trams has never been opened up, in fact other than atf/filter changes every 30k the trans has been untouched (the 1st generation saturn automatics have a canister type filter, right on the front of the trans, you dont even have to get under the car to get it out. it's ugly as sin but it runs and drives fantastic, just slow as hell. when i do the timing chain next month i'll also be replacing the lifters as theres one that is kind of noisy at starto, a common problem for these sohc 1.9's i understand. i'll also be painting, (satin black) red/white hot rod style pinstirping and moon discs on a set of 15" steel factory wheels (stock for my base model wagon is 14") replacing carpet and seats in the spring. as it's gotten pretty ratty inside. anyways, thanks for the space to rant, then rave about "baby"

these are the "before" pictures

they acted like i with 25 years of experience working on cars, motorcycles, jet skis, anything with a motor and they treated me like i was one of the kids that rides the short blue bus to school. the thing that got me the most is they wouldnt tell me WHY they wouldnt lightly modify this motor, just that they wouldnt and if i did i was an idiot. well, i was planning on a few light mods when i rebuilt the motor but now it's definitely going to happen. i even have a plan, the only thing i havent found yet is a cam supplier. ah well, we'll get it done somehow. whenever i have a little extra money i'll get one more part for the motor/trans build. i'll hot-rod ANYTHING.  i think just about every vehicle i've ever owned has eventually been altered one way or another.

Probably because they have no answer, they are probably suffering an inferiority complex, can't handle someone that knows what they are doing.... ???

I have had some issues with a local Ducati board too a while ago. Not about engine mods, but about how I painted my 748 with a 996 motor swap. Everyone was all up in arms about how I ruined a gorgeous bike and blah blah blah. I bought it wrecked, swapped a different motor into it...who cares how I paint it? I think it looks good...so that's all that matters. So I still use the forum for awesome technical help with some VERY smart people. But will not be posting any pictures of my bike again lol.

Yeah not for everyone, but too bad! lol

Good luck with your build. There is a local guy obsessed with Saturn's. He had over a dozen for parts at his shop a year or so ago. I'll talk to him tomorrow and see if he has any ideas/advice for what your plans are.

this is the best car i've ever owned, my only complaint is it is S   L   O   W. 85 hp stock and that was 450,000 miles ago. i dont want anything stupid fast just a bit more pleasant to drive on the interstates.

What year and model is the motor out of? What is it going into? Not sure what info he'll want to know, but the more I can find out the better. Hell, there is a machine shop on location at my work I can ask those guys too.

it's a 96 sohc motor. the compputer and harness for the motor are included as well. i've found a place that sells pistons with compression ratios from 8-1 to 11-1 i'm going to go far enough with it that i can still run 89 octane gas. i figure with 10-1 compression (stock is 9.3-1) and a cam with some extra duration, and not as much extra lift (i dont want to do a whole lot of port work to work with a high lift cam) and the multiport injection on the 95 or later sohc (i can get a larger throttle body and possibly a little porting on the intake i can have a good streetable motor, able to work with a stock stall speed converter and enough extra power that it wont have to kick down a gear or 2 going up hill, i'm not going racing just trying to make it a little more fun to drive.

Well i talked to the saturn obsessed guy lol. He got rid of pretty much all of them.

But anyways, he said there was a company that made performance cams but he thinks they may have gone under. His recommendation is boring it over, going higher compression(within reason), and do some serious clean up of the intake ports. I guess the stock ones are a mess. Gasket match the intake ports, clean them up, clean up the combustion chamber, go with the larger throttle body and all that good stuff and you should get a surprising amount of extra grunt. Just make sure your fuel lines are in good shape as well as your fuel pump.

Gonna check with the machine shop and one other person...but that's what I found out so far.

EDIT: also found this when using Google quickly lol

The problem with forums is that ANYONE can post, and they think that THEIR reply is the correct and EXPERT one, and everyone else is wrong.  They hide behind their keyboards a type away anything they want.

what do you need to get for the wheels? or maybe an interesting trade? I really do want the wheels but theres a cashflow problem lol i dont really have alot of cash. OH! i traded a small non-working guitar amp for an adjustable cam sprocket today, so when i do the timing chain i'll put that on.

it looks ALOT like my saturn did when it was new, almost 16 years ago.

Lol I can promise it isn't a Saturn color. The red is Ducati red, the other color is a phase change mid coat on top of black. It looks green/copper/gold depending on the angle.

Sorry not trying to take over the thread...but there are a few pics from different angles to maybe get a better idea...

As far as the wheels that'll fit your saturn go, i have to take a better look at em and see what kind of shape they are in. I'll get back to you...it'll be cheap though don't worry.
