CB550 Brake rotors
« on: December 06, 2009, 11:45:35 AM »
Not sure if this is the correct place to post this question but here goes anyway. I'm using the front wheel off a 74(?) CB550 in a project bike I'm building. It's not a Honda so my knowledge of thes bikes pretty limited. The wheel is going into a 84 Kawasaki GPZ750 fork, it's almost a drop in fit except for the rotors. Since the CB550 had a single disc from the factory the rotor is much thicker than the twin discs used on the Kawi. Does anybody make a floating rotor conversion for the Honda carriers, or a complete rotor? When Honda went to twin discs did they make them thinner than the single?
Any and all info greatly appreciated!

Honda 750F 77/78 used a small twin rotor setup. Thin discs with 5 hole pattern, not sure if they are smaller than 550.

Is the 550 disc same dia as Kawi, or smaller?

Same diameter, 270mm. Thats one of the reasons I want to use this wheel. The fork is going into a much older bike and I needed something with spoked wheels, but anything I found with twin disc was cast. Thanks for the info, I'll check whats available for the 750F.

750F discs will not fit 550 wheel as 750F2/3 was 5 bolt and 550 6 bolt same as the 750K. To the best of my knowledge there was no thinner disc with the correct bolt pattern to fit the wheel you got

So I've been finding out :( I guess another option would be to have them surface ground to the needed thickness. Any idea if its possible to successfully detach the rotor from the carrier and reattach it?

Drill the heads off the rivets and use HT bolts with nylock nuts to re-attach. Years ago a UK firm made cast iron rotors and thats what they were supplied with

Dynoman has a rotor that's worth a look.  Don't know the dimensions, you'd need to check with them: http://www.dynoman.net/brakes/ebc-apps.html
