Primary Chains and Tensioner, are they still available??
« on: December 26, 2005, 09:09:42 PM »
Hey guys, I'm checking out my spare bottom end, and upon first visual inspection, everything looks like its pretty nice. no scoring on bearing faces, no crazy sludge.... so its looking like I may use this one, however the roller for the primary chain tensioner, doesnt move, and I'd prolly feel happier if I put fresh primary chains on when I rebuild.  Are these still available through honda? (canada/US) or where have you guys located this stuff? Or am I in the realm of obsolete?

Thanks again for all the info guys!!

Well, yes, they are around, but........,

I found that David Silver Spares does list some original Honda parts for your ride, but I came away with the impression that they were rather pricey.

It looks to me like they are around $70 to $80 each for the chain and the tensioner (ouch!).

A quick search on some other sites like The Old Bike Barn, Parts n More, and a couple of others did not show any of these being listed.

I hope you have better luck checking around for new ones than what I had..........

I replaced the primary chains on my F2 when I restored it, bought them from David Silver Spares, and when I compared old to new, I couldn't detect any stretching or wear, which I thought unusual, as my bike had been "flogged" by a PO moron.

I guess that a double row chain running in oil with no dirt, dust, water or other contaminants to adversely affect it will last a very long time? My tensioner was fine so I didn't bother replacing it, but I could have bought one from DSS too. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I have always measured the stretch on the primary chains before replacing. This can be done by removing the sump pan and measuring the distance from the gasket face to the tensioner.
The factory limit is 70mm and a new chain is around 65mm. I always replace if 67mm or greater.
You can tell if the tensioner rubber is going as it becomes very hard. If soft and there is no sign of breaking up use it again

If you have the part numbers try www.westernhillshonda.com but he is usually a bit more expensive than DSS it all boils down to shipping AND dont forget the import duties
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

The primary chains (2) and tensioner are available as a kit from www.cmsnl.com.

Thanks Guys, I'll try the western hill to try and avoid the cross continental shipping,  The Roller is hard as a rock, and doesn't turn for the tensioner!!
