An Interesting Discovery...
« on: December 24, 2005, 09:15:43 PM »
Howdy,

I removed the exhaust pipes from my CB550 today and I was quite surprised to find that there were no gaskets in the manifold. Could this be right? The split rings were in place and clamped down tight with the collars. It didn't seem to leak excessively. I really believe that there should be some type of gasket used. Can anyone confirm this.

They are supposed to have copper crush gaskets there.  They are shapped like donuts when new.  Get very flat when used.
You sure you just didn't recognize them?
Do some cleaning.

When i pulled my exhaust to paint it black , I also found their were no gaskets as well.
When I re-installed , I used the correct copper gaskets...

Get a metal scribe with a "pick" end, or even a bent spoke with a sharpened end, and probe around in there mate, you should be able to feel the "bump" between the gasket and port.

Unless it sounded like me farting after a huge christmas lunch and more booze than the average man can drink and not die from, there are gaskets in place. They get covered in carbon and they're hard to see, but they're there. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Thank's Dave.

I've been thinking of ordering some stuff from DSS but I've been holding off because I figure the shipping costs to the US will be a killer.

You'd think, but you'd be wrong.  Every time I've ordered parts from DSS, not only has the shipping been on par with domestic suppliers, but it has been faster than all of them as well.  I usually get my parts from DSS in about a week.

That's true Gordy, and if you tell DSS not to use those thieves at UPS (#$%*s!) but Royal Mail, (everything is Royal this, and Royal that in Pommyland, even the toilets are made by Royal Doulton, ha ha! :P) the cost is negligeable. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Thanks for the heads up on the UPS thing. I was trying to find out what shipping costs were via Royal Mail but I couldn't seem to find much for international shipping rates. But if they have beeter rates than UPS then I'm all for it.

I never specified what shipping I wanted on previous orders, so I think they just use the least expensive method unless instructed otherwise.  And they don't tell you what the shipping cost will be beforehand, they just add it to the total and charge your card.  A risky proposition when dealing with less reputable sellers, but I've dealt with DSS dozens of times and never once been burned.  Only once did they screw up and send the wrong part, and when I let them know, they said to keep it and sent the correct part free of charge.  That's the way to run a business!

It's the other way around Gordy, they use UPS unless one of their customers complains that a 150 dollar order cost 200 f*cking bucks in shipping and "Government Charges"! You see, those theiving turds at UPS (United Pirate services) intentionally "walk" the items through customs here so they can charge you an additional "handling fee" on top of the "Sales Tax" that customs will add to the parcel. None of this happens if DSS just sends it to you in the mail, and you don't pay any sales tax outside of Britain. Did I mention that UPS sucks? Cheers, Terry. ;D

Try www.parcelforce.co.uk for your postage cost but you will have to know the weight of your parcel. Anything over 2Kg (sorry even Lizzies post office has gone metric!) will go parcel

I don't think ol' liz's got much to do with it Bryan, now that you guys have dissolved the British Empire and are just part of the wider European Community, you may as well just get used to doing what your French, German and Spanish masters tell you to do, ha ha! (sorry) Cheers, Terry. ;D
