Remove starter from 1975 CB400F.....
« on: December 08, 2009, 12:11:30 AM »
I have a 1975 CB400F that I would like to remove the starter off and run kickstart only.

Anybody know how big a job this is.....is it as simple as unbolting and removing the starter?

Do I need to put something like a freeze plug in the hole the starter ran thru?  Any other suggestions?  What size plug?

Any advice or information is appreciated.  Its cold in the shop and Im in more of a do mode then an experiment mode.....

Yep, just remove the starter, and you can lose the solenoid, too.  You will need to plug the starter hole, though.  If you need more detailed info on that do a search from the main page.  There have been lots of discussions on that in the past, just choose your search terms wisely.  Something like "starter plug" would probably bring up at least a couple of good topics.

you can get an expandable rubber plug at Home Depot or at the Auto Parts store.  Size is just over 1" if I remember correctly.  You want the rubber plug that has the bolt thru the middle.  Clean the oil out of the hole with brake claner and then put some 1104 ThreeBond on the plug.  Resist the temptation to over tighten the plug.  Just get it a titch more than snug.  The tighter you make it the more likely it is to want to pop back out since the rubber area isn't exactly flat along the length of the plug when it is expanded.  If you don't have 1104, then any good gasket sealer will work fine.
