heavy metal!!
« on: December 26, 2005, 11:28:26 PM »
Has anyone else found their motorcycle(and/or parts) becoming heavier year by year.
When I was about 19 or so I could gator wrestle the motor up onto the bench by myself, with some effort.
Now it takes two of my mates to lift, and me to supervise.
And we have trouble getting past the beer fridge  ;)
Where will it all end.??
Cheers Jeff.
I know its only rock and roll,
but I like it...

You need one of those short fridges , then you can use it as the bench for the motor and never again have to walk away from your wrenching to get a beer  ;D

I turned my beer fridge into a tool chest, so now when I reach for a nice cool wrench I can get myself a beer, thus saving that annoying walk!  ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Here is my solution, I never pass a Salavation Army store without checking it. So far, I have "scored" three of the small hydraulic cherry pickers that are designed to move patients in hospitals from one bed to another, or on to a gurney. These are usually light at about 35 pounds, wheeled and chrome plated. The usual load limit is 450 pounds. Total lift height is about 6 feet. Of course, if I had even one friend this would probably be unnecessary. You have two "mates" and beer, I don't know why you are complaining.

I agree. Pulling a motor , swapping a trans, and so on have all gotten a bit more of a task in the past few years.
Guess I am getting older ............ ::)

Pretty d@mn clever idea. Thanks.  ;) I seem to recall being able to wrestle mine alone years ago. Had occasion to heft a 750 engine out of the back of my CRV alone about a year ago. I have to say, it seemed to have gained some weight.. as have I.  ;D

by the way, i don't remember who suggested this in an old thread, but i just pulled the motor from a cb550 by myself using the "lay it down" method. it helped that most everything else was stripped off of the bike anyway, but i just undid all engine mounts but one, then layed it over onto a soft blanket. lifted the frame right off of it, and voila! no pretending to be a 16 year old weight trainer.

Wonder what the power to weight ratio of those old "easy to lift" motors is compared to a modern one..............
I'd rather ride a Yamaha than eat worms.

;) Well, something along those lines.  HIRAX is/was more of a thrash band than heavy metal, but metal all the same.  You a fan?  Check out old Exodus, like "bonded by blood"   good #$%*.  They played together(Hirax and Exodus..Slayer too) back when early thrash was emerging in the Bay area.  I think its awesome that they have a black vocalist...pretty rare for the metal scene and those dudes are as hardcore as they get!  Definitly a big cultural hurdle there, so they have to be.

metalhead550- no, not much of a hirax fan, and yes they are more thrash than metal. i saw exodus play actually, both back in the day and at a reunion show in oakland for a friend who had just died in the late 90's. i liked a lot of that stuff when i was young, but these days the only metal i like are classics like metallica, slayer, maiden, etc. or boltthrower, entombed, or at the gates. on the multi-cultural tip: i'm definitely not down with all of the ultra fascist scando-black metal. not that many of the other bands were probably the sharpest knives in the drawer either, but straight racism/xenophobia is a whole different ballgame.

Ha ha thanks to paulages this has now turned into the post I was mislead to believe it was! ;D  Sorry guys(not really).  Exactly, black metal is a whole different set of bull#$%*.  I dont even consider it metal so much as an excuse for fags to dress up like vampires and validate their hatred and depression.  Not what metal is about even in the slightest and I refuse to be associated with groups such as those.  How old are you now?  Ive been listening for about a decade and I still cant get enough!  There are still some bands out there creating high caliber tunes and as far as Im concerned, skill in speed, technicality, and song writing are at an all time high.  Just gotta know were to look...and have a friend who is even more obsessed with it than you and burns you a couple hundred albums!

just to clarify here though, one of the thing those "fags" are into in norway, besides burning down churches and being really racist is killing homosexuals. i personally don't care who people want to screw, but i sure as hell think that in the western world/ 21st century people ought not be getting lynched for it.

but yeah...they look pretty silly.

i'm 30. been listening to punk and metal since i was 10 or 11. maiden was one of the first obscure or wierd type music i ever got obsessed with. as for modern metal, i'm more into the discharge (punk band, but was a major influence on motorhead, metallica, etc.) influenced stuff coming out of sweden. not purely metal, but certainly has the instrumentation.

but, uh yeah. those darn hondas sure are getting heavy...

Gotcha,  No hatred for gays here either.  Ive socialized with a few in my time and most of those Ive met are good people.  I just tend to use the word "fag" as a generic derogatory.  I figure its tough enough being gay already and being condemned by religious groups and sometimes family so why make it any worse for em.

following the derailment of this thread you guys heard of electric wizard? If not check em out, they are the heavy to the metal and the kick ass!
And for the weight to age ratio yes when I was a little younger and lifting weights curling 120 pounds was not out of the ordinary for me, now the arthritis in my left shoulder is so bad I'm lucky if I can lift the rear wheel of my bike onto the work bench with out going for the Advil and ice packs.

No Ill check em out.  Sounds like ultra-cheesy power metal....which is a good thing!

For other cheesy powermetal bands I recommend:

Iced Earth
Demons and Wizards
Iron Savior
Dungeon
Primal Fear
Falconer(Self Title album...the rest suck as far as Im concerned)

Nevermind, looks like Electric Wizard is Doom metal but I could find any samples.  Doom tends to be to slow for my taste but there are exceptions.

A good VEGEMITE sandwich will give you the energy to lift those motors. Terry takes them out one handed, and uses the other hand to put a new one in.  ;D

Ah Bobby, you're too kind, (geez I'm sick of rock bands all of a sudden!) but in fact I use one hand to just lift the complete bike and shake the engine out, while using the other hand to hold my beer, and scratch my enormous testicles. (another by-product of Vegemite consumption) Cheers, Terry. ;D
