Anyone Know Where To Get Felt Carb Seals...
« on: December 10, 2009, 03:35:56 PM »
Without losing my shirt?  I need all 4 and the local dealer wants $30 each.  There has to be a better deal out there.  This "get it on the road" quick build has bankrupted me, literally and spiritually.  1977 CB750F.  part numbers:
 (2)  insulator  A   (16211-300-030)                                                                     (2)         insulator   B   (16212-300-030)

Those part numbers don't seem to be the felt seals:

Mystic_1 Is that the picture of what the part numbers refer to?  Am I reading tha link correctly which states that these are not even the right part for my 77F?

Yeah part numbers 16211-300-030 and 16212-300-030 are the carb mounting rubbers that connect the carbs to the head on K0-K6 and F CB750's.  Which felt seals are you looking for?

Honda liked to use felt seals on carbs that had rotating shafts connecting the carb bodies for hte throttle and choke plates, usually in CV carb designs.  Early 750 carbs have no felt seals except maybe at the choke lever pivots?

They are the ones at the choke assembly, iirc.  I need to FIND my parts manual.  The '77 and '78 F models  (F2 and F3) Have a unique carbeurator which is not the same as, nor swappable with any others.

Either way a mechanic buddy that is helping me out with my resurrection gave me those numbers.  Evidently whatever it is that they are called, they are $30 each at the stealership.

Believe it or not....I had a torn felt seal and I punched it out of an old felt coat... from the edge of a jacket about the same thickness...  I cut out the circle and then punch the center hole....  worked like a charm...

That is damn tempting.  I am sucking air into the carbs at these, so I do need to address it...but really, parts like this should be priced like Home Depot bags:  anything in a plastic bag about this size on the wall is $.98.  This size bag is $1.98.  wouldn't that be nice?

I think as Mystic alludes, the part number you have is for the "insulators" or rubber boots that connect the carbs to the head. I'm looking at a parts fishy on motogrid.com and I don't see any felt washers unless they are part of an "assembly" which is discontinued.

Motogrid prices those insulators at $18, but even $30 is fair for what they are.

But i don't think they are what you want. What you want you should just get from the hardware, of from your jacket liner.

I think I remember seeing on the motorcyclecarbs.com website that they had just started to carry the felt seals.

I had to replace those on my 550 carbs.  I just went to walmart and bought some felt material and cut them out with an exacto knife.

As my manual is at home and I am dealing with this at work...thank god I have my monitor facing away from the door...does anyone know the actual Honda part number for this piece?  I believe they come in a sort of set for the OEM part.  Thanx

After a long holiday break, I am back on this issue.  Looks like the stealership only sells these guys already attached to the shafts.  that would be $357.00 each....hmmmm?  I could have bought a really nice set of...

Yeah, anyway, if to cut these out myself, I have a couple of questions:

1) Is there a certain kind of felt that is necessary?  Is there a difference between McMaster and, say, Michaels or Wallymart?
2) Does anyone know the dimensions  (ID and OD) for each shaft?  The 2 shafts and housings are different diameters (by my expertly calibrated eyes).
3) Does anyone know the required thickness of felt?  does it make a difference?

Thank all the gurus who chime in on this one, i am at my wit's end as this is the last step in getting this beast back on the road.

I  have a '77 750F and don't remember seeing any felt seals like that on my carbs when I just took them apart. Where exactly do they go (can't tell from that pic)? And what exactly do they do?
If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice.

Tugboat-

They go on either side of each carb where the the throttle linkage and choke shafts enter.

And what exactly do they do?

They keep dust, water, etc from finding their way into the carbs where the shafts go through the carb bodies.  They are not really airtight although I'm sure they help minimize air leaks.  I suspect they should be oiled in some way but I have never seen reference to such a thing.  Felt is used, I believe, because it doesn't provide significant drag against the shaft when it rotates.

They must be doing something for reducing air leakage, because mine are cruddy ann when starting fluid is sprayed near them, it is DEFINITELY being sucked into the engine.

Are small animals getting sucked in too?  Might need to replace those boots or check to see if they're tight. Seriously though, given the location of those felt seals, I don't think you'd be getting that bad of a leak even if they weren't present.  I think the path the air would have to take would have too many right angles to really affect it.
Those washers weren't meant to be an airtight gasket.  Who knows?  Only way to see would be to take them out and see how it goes = not worth it.

In response to what diameters, measurements they should be:  they just kinda sit in there, a standard thickness felt would work, and just cut them to shape.
