quick front bake questions
« on: January 24, 2006, 04:13:06 PM »
Having some troubles with my front brakes. I was just wondering if it really mattered if the bike was running while bleeding? I don't see why it would have to, but just checking. I already began to bleed it, and think I am good, but I pressed on the brake lever after the bleeder was closed and the caliper isn't retracting, shouldn't the piston be relieved of pressure after letting go of the lever?  I tried moving the front wheel, and it was a struggle. I did already clean the piston and rubber seal, even took the seal off and cleaned behind it. There's no clog in the lines that I noticed because everything seems to be flowing just fine.
Thanks for your help.

loosen the bleeder after you let go of the brake handle and see if the piston retracts then,if so,you either have a hose thats collapsing internally or the small hole in the master cylinder that lets fluid back in is clogged.

Try a search for "caliper piston seal", or "brake piston", etc. and you'll find a ton of info on sticky brakes.  It could be the caliper 'hole' is slightly too big, allowing the piston to slightly cock. Or there's a tiny hole in the MC that can get gunked up.  The piston seal may be toast.  Unfortunately, lots of potential problems.

But, running the bike shouldn't have any impact one way or another as the engine and brakes are not 'connected'.
