Wanted to take the Hot Rod for a spin today before winter really sets in.  My battery would not turn it over.  It is showing 12 volts, but I guess it doesn't have enough juice left to crank it over - 3 year old battery.

A 12 Volts battery that shows 12 volts is almost dead.
A 100% charged battery in rest will show around 12,7 volts
    80% 12,5 V
    70% 12,4 V
    60% 12,3 V
    50% 12,2 V
    40% 12,1 V
    20% 11,9 V
      0% 11,6 V

One doesn't have to. When you don't use your bike for a longer period of time a batterycharge every five weeks is more than enough. There's no need to charge if battery reads 12,5 volts or more. All together tenders consume a lot of power worldwide and there's always a risk of fire. If insurance companies find out, you have a problem.

If you allow me: they've calculated that in all of Europe two coalburning powerplants work around the clock just to generate the electricity for... our doorbelltrafos! I repeat: our doorbelltrafos, two coalburning powerplants. They only ring a few seconds a day (if at all) and all that time, 24 hours per day valuable energy is lost in... heat. It's the same with all these tenders.

I do sue a tender, but I guess the battery has had its day.  Max charge I could get is around 12.3 volts.

I have a new AMG battery still in the box.  I guess I'll add the acid and get it to full charge.

Best way to treat a new battery. Add acid* and leave battery alone for about an hour and a half. Then charge battery up to 14,4 volts with around 1 amp load (1,5 amp max!). Disconnect charger. Done.
*Take care not to spill acid on battery. This can create leakpaths.

The AGM that I bought needs to be filled first.  I bought it unfilled so that I could store it until spring.  It is a DEKA, very nice battery.

 It reads 6.8 volts after I run it!      Neutral light up bright.

 and its less when I start it, sometimes you can barely see neutral light..

 But I never use e-start... mayybe when I am 75 or 80 I will..

Must be a 6 V battery, a 12 V battery that shows 6,8 V is no more, it's dead, stiff, it has perished and certainly hasn't the energy left to go and see it's maker.

Sure, you can prolong the use of your battery a lot by kickstarting. The original Yuasa and the second one on mine each lived 7 years, be it that the 7th year I was not able to e-start.

 I do know this, years ago we had a stock size battery in a 750 with a dead cell. Drilled holes in top, soldered a jumper across the dead cell, and closed up the holes. It e started (just fine), in summer weather, after that.. so I am thinking around 10 volts.

 Also I have been able to estart, warmed up motors with a 5.5 amp battery..

Nothing uses voltage, an electric starter (CB500) draws around a 100 amps, that's a consumption of well over 1200 Watts. That's a lot. As a rule of thumb: when - during an e-start - voltage drops below 9 volts, consider your battery shot (if it was well charged).

Its a good trick to use if you are travelling and cannot find a battery, even if you have lots of cash. My buddy came part way home one weekend with lantern batteries on his bike, till he got to someone who could fix his 6V generator..

 I never found it that amazing, till I joined this forum and people were saying that you need more battery to run the bike, than I have had, on more than one occasion.

 If you never had a multimeter, you dont know what you have, if it starts, you keep going.. God protects the ignorant, dontcha know..

Dont take my word for it, PM 1080, he measured my battery in the last 2 weeks, it was under 7 volts, with indicators brightly lit, and it has been starting in 30 degree weather, when you can barely see the neutral light..

I beg to differ.  I have one that is unfilled - I can snap pics as proof if you require.  You don't fill a gel battery, but the AGM I have you do.

  For what it's worth...when I ordered my last 2 AGM batteries I had the option of having them delivered to me either charged or not.

Good stuff.  Long time no see, Art.  How are things in your neck of the woods?  The warm spell we had over spring break got me anxious to ride again so a dug the bike out and got to working.  Should have her fired up tonight with fresh coils and a dyna s
