@#$* rearsets!!!
« on: December 03, 2009, 03:31:41 AM »
Does anyone know where I can find a good set of rearsets for my '77 CB750K???? I like the Tarozzis but the guy at Fast from the Past basically said it was a "no go". Starting to go a little nuts here.

I don't have access to the equipment to do the kinds of mods you had to do to fit the CBR sets. That was why I was hoping to get something that would be more of a "bolt-on" nature. I guess where there is a will there is a way.

the ones carpy sells are pretty sweet, expensive though.

Have you checked www.fastfromthepast.com ?  I know they have some for 70-75.  Not sure about 77 though.

It seems like the ones that Carpy sells and the ones that Fast From the Past sells are the same. Tarozzi is the name. Couldn't figure out why Carpy's was so much more expensive than the ones from Fast From the Past. Maybe he does something extra like powder coat, etc. to them. The guy from Fast From the Past told me that the '77 CB750K sold in Europe is different than the ones sold here in the U.S. so the Tarozzis would fit the Euro spec '77 CB750K but not the U.S. spec one. He also told me the Raask sets would fit fine but if you pay attention to some of the threads regarding Raask vs. Tarrozi rearsets on these forums, people just aren't too fond of the Raask for various reasons. Because of that I'm a bit leary of the Raasks.

I'm wondering if I could use most of the Tarozzi equipment and then have a bracket custom fabricated or machined?

If your going to do that, buy the universal set from www.fastfromthepast.com.  Its much cheaper is meant to be used with a custom mounting application.

Universal is another word for half ass fit and looks like #$%*... IMHO...

I bought cheapos off ebay, and used various mounting techniques discussed in older threads. Try searching for "frame clamps"

here's a page that may help.

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=2894.msg47307#msg47307

I was thinkin about doin what is explained in this post, but I think on my 750K1 they would have to mount a bit higher than I want for them to work. because of where they could be clamped to on the frame.

I'm planning on getting the Tarozzi's and clip ons from fast from the past. seems like a lot of stuff on carpy's site is spendy. I want the Yosh pipes from him.

I don't think that universal stuff has to be half-assed or look like #$%*. It makes it a whole lot more difficult to get it the way you want but I think that has to be part of the cafe motorcycle experience. If everything was bolt on and easy it just might not be the same. I've come to understand part of the fun of these cafe conversions is coming up with creative solutions to issues like the one in this thread. That being said, an immeasurable amount of thanks should go to people like members of this website, Carpy, Benjie and others who have figured out solutions to some problems and make them available to others like myself.

I'm hoping that someone has figured out a way to mount the Tarozzi rearsets on the '77 750K or have custom fabricated a bracket for them and is willing to either sell or share their design. It seems like modification of the newer rearsets (a la CBR) are a bit outside my capabilities. I think I would be able to either carry an existing plan or design to a local machine shop and have them do a set for me if such a plan or design existed.

I second that. That is a much better solution. And I agree about the universals taking more effort to get right, but I also know that most universal anythings are of a lesser quality than something built for a specific model. From my own experience anyways...

I'm looking at the Raasks sets for my my '77 CB750K on Omar's rearsets. While everyone says the Raasks are of lesser quality, it does seem like the have the bracket that will fit my motorcycle. Does anyone think that if Omar could sell me just the brackets that I could get away with using a universal set from Tarozzi?

The universal ones from fastfromthepast are tarozzi (sp?), they just don't have the bike specific mounting hardware

I've been in email contact with a guy by the name of Ed Morton from Omar Cafe. He's been really helpful thus far. He has told me that they have tried combining brackets from the Raask with hardware from Tarozzi on a BMW and thought that between the cost and the additional modification it just wasn't worth it. He conceded that the Raasks might not look as good (which includes the finish) as the Tarozzis but he said he hasn't had any complaints about them breaking. He did tell me that they do mount a little high but he also said he has never had any complaints (riding position) about that either.

The questions I've asked have been all specific to my bike and project ('77 CB750K) so I've learned that guys with different years, sizes, or models might want to ask very specific questions when looking into either Raask or Tarozzi. They might not have something that would fit my model and year bike but they might have something that will work for you. Ed was very adamant about there not being anyway to get the Tarozzi rearsets on my bike without extensive modifications. I personaaly do not have the skill (yet!!!) nor do I have access to the machinery that would be needed to make this work. I'm not sure I trust the local machinist shop with something like this.

This is why for me guys, it's gonna have to be the Raasks. Looking at the pic of the Raasks for my year and model the finish on the  brackets do look a little funky. I think I might be able to get a round this by having them powder coated. The finish on the rest of the pieces look fine to me. There also seems to be an "old school" look to the Raasks as well that I can appreciate.

I think if you go with clubman bars like I have you almost have to go with rearsets because of the change in rider position. Because of my circumstances, I need to get as much bolt on equipment as possible. I'll think about it some more over the weekend but I think I'm gonna go with the Raasks. I have read in certain threads where the Raasks get dogged because of lack percieved lack of quality and finish. But for my application, the Raasks might be the only and best way to go. What do you guys think?????

I'm using the Raask brackets with universal Tarozzis after I wrecked the original Raask pegs. Looks good but is a tight fit on the backside with the pegs nut not having enough clearance between frame and bracket. So I machined the brackets as well. Took away material around the holes. If using the Raask brackets fitting the 69 to 76 K you might also need to remove a little bit from the right side bracket around the swing arm bolt nut.
There is unfortunately no Tarozi bracket available for the 77K as far as I know. Not even in Europe. The K77 spec in this area is absolutely identical between the European and US-spec.
Most people don't like the Raasks as I beleive because Raask moves the pegs not only backwards but also quite high up. The looks itself is not to bad as long as you have the cast aluminum pegs fromm Raask and not the steel/rubber ones. At least the Raask looks very 70ish.

What might as well be a good idea to use as bracket is the stock bracket from the 79 DOHC CB900 Bol Dor. I was told they could fit to the bolt pattern we have on our SOHC frames and they are unlike the 77F2 ones symmetrical in height left and right. Maybe someone out there did that allready. As far as I know did a prototype version of the K77 which was used for taking catalogue pictures have similar brackets to F2 or the DOHC and by the way did have a rear disk brake like the F. The picture can be found on the picture sampler Honda came out with for the press to celebrate the 30th anniversary of our beloved 750 Four.

So you did have to end up machining the Raasks to fit the Tarozzi sets, huh. I think I'm going to get the Raasks and see how they work out. I think that should be the first step. If I think they need any modification then I'll go from there. I also keep hearing about the "eccentricities" of the '77-'78 model year 750's. For some reason Honda may have went a little whacky for those design years. Maybe they were just transitioning out from the previous model years.

I would hate to buy the Tarozzi universal set and then try to get the Raask bracket to find out I can't make any of it work. That seems more like an expensive experiment and gamble I don't want to do. I'll see how that works out.
