i have the tool for installing the bearings to the frame , once your ready ... i'd be happy to lone it to ya ..... it really makes the install process way easier

.... and you could get the old bearing races off without a dremel,  it's the same process that IC explains ... it's just alot harder cuz they're 30 some odd years old

it might just be easier (for you) to paint the other one,  but the parts could be switched around and installed inside an hour or two

Spike...
I thought of that. However the main reason I was doing the switch is because the state of wisconsin does not want to title the other one because it was junked, the one I painted has a title and bill of sale, so I can get plates for it. So its either try and change out the races or just get new bearings and dust covers and put the old one back together the way it was when it was stock. So I am going to try and swap out the races. As IC said its only $48 for new ones if I F*&^ these up.  Hope that side job pans out for ya..

Joe,
Thanks for the comment.. I am trying like crazy to get stuff done on it but its slow going.

I have to work this Sat and possiably Sunday but hope to get some more done on it.. I think I am going to try and get the races swapped out.. (fingers crossed)

Cool, thanks I will keep that in mind, I would rather buy from a forum member then not.. I also have some
parts for him to get me, if I can get it all done on Paypal then it will go on the card and I can do it soon.

I have to say I'm pretty impressed with the build so far. Love the gold frame! Very nice!

One thing: I highly recommend you use the method described above where you actually install the frame to the engine rather than the other way around; very, very easy to do with one person and absolutely no struggle, need for tape or fear of damaging the paint. Do it before you add anything else and you won't regret it. Here are a few pics that show the process:

And this thread covers it in more detail:

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=49551.0

Just don't want to see that purdy paint job get all boogered up!

Keep up the good work! I'll definitely be following this one!

love the gold color ! I was looking at the picture of the peg back on page one and it doesn't look like it will fold up like it should if you drag it. Maybe its just the angle of the picture. Are they kurakyn iso pegs ?

rustrocket92:
You might be correct, the pegs were recemeneded by HavocTurbo and Spikeybike and I know spikey uses them on his 550.. If they turn out to be a problem then I will change them. I will sure watch for that now that you brought it up.. Thanks!

SohRon:
Thanks man, it means a lot coming from you after seeing your build thread I did in fact use the method you show in the images below. However I had to get my son to help lift the motor onto the work space I have setup. My build will not be any match compared to yours however I look forward to your comments as well as others as this is the first true build I have done and need all the advice I can get..

Thanks!!!

Well I worked all Saturday and some of today.. Still I managed to get some time in on the project. So the old races came out like butter.. I mean only like 3 taps with a long screw driver and a heavy hammer.. Really did not even make any marks on them.. So on to the baring races, well the top one came out easy enough.. However the bottom one is smooth with the inside of the neck of the frame so much so there is no place to grip it.. So if some one has a way I can get the bottom one out that would be wonderful.. Other wise I have to buy the kit. I really had not included that in the original cost, but if that is what I have to do then.. so be it.

Well off to cook some steaks then back out to the garage for a few more hours..

I think you need a sharper screwdriver. scarring that seat lip with a little nick wont be a big deal, just don't damage the new races.

Except there is no lip what so ever to catch even the sharpest screwdriver, its almost like the ID of the in side of the race is bigger then the od of the neck of the frame.. I will go double check because its possible I missed it.

Well after trying every thing I could I just can't get any contact with the race.. Here is the best photo I could get of it. The picture does not show it very well however its smooth as a baby's butt and the race just does not stick out any place I can get a grip on it...

Yea, I tried to get a shot of the race but it was dark and my camera is really old and the pictures turned out blurry.... there is one there for sure..

I did not notice but the races are different sizes I tried the top one on the gold frame and it fit snugly on top but VERY loosely on the bottom.. go figure. I think (unless some one gives me a really good tip to get it out) I will have to spring for new ones, just money being tight it was not my first choice..

hmm... bend the tip of an old flat head at a slight angle and sharpen it to a spoon shape on the end

from the underside, tap the the blade at a 90ish degree angle from the neck, in between the race and the seat in the neck.
do this all around till it opens up a bit and you can twist an un-modified screwdriver in there.

maybe that will work

Spikey!! Good to see you were on, even if just for a short time..

i've been coming to the library job hunting on there interweb   ;)......

so i finally took my bike out for a lil test ride, and thought i should let you know to not worry about the stock gearing (sprockets) with the smaller rear wheel .. it pulled just fine.
i didn't wanna push it too much in the corners, with the "not-so-dry" roads so i don't really know how much it changed the cornering (hopefully not much cuz thats my favorite thing about the lil 550...how well it corners)
i also noticed the rear was alot easier on the bumps too. i'm gonna write a better review of all these mods in my thread once i get some better test rides in

Progress is always a good thing. ;D

Must be nice to have the engine back in......worst case on the race is cut it out with a dremel and replace...someone MUST have an extra I would think.....

Joe:
I wish I had the motor in, its still on the saw horses awaiting paint and chrome etc.. However I am making some progress its little steps and I can't wait for it to be over.  However I am having fun now tho..

Spikey:
Hope you find some thing.. What type of job are you looking for? Do me a favour and PM me with the link once you do the write up so I can read it.. Can't wait to read it. Good to know about the rear wheel. Sounds great, as for cornering I am not that concerned as much as I like going in hard on a corner I can always take it easy if need be and not miss it too much. I will be taking the rims in to the shop in a week or so to have the tires removed so I can lace the 16 inch on the back hub and replace the spokes on the front. That is my biggest fear at this point. I did find that thread on how to lace the hubs so I think that will be a big help..
GL on your job hunt man!

As for the races, I went ahead and ordered new ones, I can not for the life of me get that bottom one out. I will use the new ones and they were not all that much..

If you don't mind ruining the race, tack weld a piece of steel one side to the other then drive it out.
