Oh yea.. She is running strong.. I need to adjust the cam chain tensioner and the tappets and sync the carbs but none of that is so bad so I can take my time with it. In fact I am on vacation all next week so I will have some time for that. As for the exhaust, well it will be a winter thing along with the braided brake lines etc.. I can wait, and it gives me plenty to do over the winter months along with the GS1000 build I am doing.

Yea, same here.. Once I get it running I am going to look at the lines, etc.. I am thinking since its such a big bike and it has power to spare, I may make this a touring bike with fairing and bags.. Not sure tho? She runs pretty sweet given she is a 81 and been in a garage for over 10 years not touched. Anyway still thinking about it. One option still on the table is to sell her and use the money to beef up the motor on my 550.. ;)

Have you gone through the carbs; the float needle valve isn't working clearly. It's got a dirty seat or is damaged...or the float isn't moving freely in the float bowl. Or you could have a leaky float causing it (hole in the float).
Uh just to clarify, is it leaking out of the float bowl gasket area or overflow?
If float bowl gasket, then you need a new gasket or the bowl has a problem. Could be an undersized gasket if it has new gaskets.

Glad you got it running.
The big GSs are nice bikes, great for long distances if you have a good comfortable saddle.

Yea, I replaced the float needle and the seat it sits in. So I am guessing its either a hole in the float, tho I don't think so since all 4 are leaking the same way, or the float level, seems the most likely cause. I did replace the float bowl gasket on all of them as it came in the kit I picked up. It did this before I even touched the carbs so I am guessing the PO mucked things up, and I did not adjust the float levels since I did not have the info when I was doing it.
The odd part about this bike, and maybe its the same on all Suzuki's is the petcock is vacuum operated, that is when on reg setting gas does not flow until a vacuum is created. They do give an over ride called PRI (as mentioned in the video) and reserve seems to bypass this also. I don't believe it has anything to do with what is going on, however it was just some thing I found odd.. But then I am a newb with bikes and carbs so...

Ok anyone want to take a guess as to why the the carbs are leaking like crazy.? I will provide one hint.. Its not the floats, float needle or float needle seats..

Check back in 1hr for the answer...  ;D

Lol.. You are close...

I was an idiot.. I was hooking up the gas line to the vacuum port on the petcock...

So the gas was running out of the vacuum ports.. Yea, I am that much of a newb.. Man..

Well I am going out to hook it up the other way around and see..

When I pulled my 4-2 pipes off and upon closer inspection....lets just say you wouldn't want them.  they went to the dumpster....there was nothing really left......not worth the postage.

Ok Joe thanks for the thought anyway.. I am still trying to figure out what I want to do with it once I get the cash to do some thing.

Well some progress on the 1000, I hooked up the gas line to the correct hose and tada, there is no gas leaking any longer. The only issue now is if I give it gas slowly, it revs to about 4 to 5k and starts to bog, if I get on it quickly (i.e. blip the throttle) it bogs.. so clearly some thing is going wrong there.. However its late and I am tired so off to bed with me..

It rained most of today, so Sunday if it does not rain I am taking Penguin out for a run because I need to ride a bike that does not give me such issues to re-energize myself.

Later..

Ahh.....235th. I saw it as I rode by tonight around 7-ish.....you may have heard Rex thundering by.......nothing set in stone for the weekend yet, but that could change in a heartbeat.

Well its getting worse.. I am going to have to try tightening down the heads and see what happens.. This is what it looked like after a 15min ride at 65+ and getting on it as hard as I could from stop signs..

Hmmm. Hard to tell from the pix exactly where it originates, but rocker box gasket would be my first guess.

There is no oil above where the fins get bigger, so head gasket? Spikeybike and Godffrey saw a sample of it last Sunday, I pointed it out then. So I probably just need to tighten the nuts some but not till next weekend. The other side however had no real leaks so I am hoping that will work.

either the gasket or the oil passage o-rings , either way , tightening the head bolts might remedy it

Sure hope you are correct. Think I should pick up a torque wrench and see what they are at currently. Stay tuned, next Sunday night I will post the verdict. Tho I have to work next weekend also so hopefully I can get it done.

Sweet what year? Don't know. I haven't seen it yet......

Pictures? I haven't seen it yet......

Does it run? No. Supposedly missing the carb bank and tank? But the price is right ($0.00) and it supposedly has a title. A friend of one of my bike buddies asked him if he wanted it....being strictly a Brit bike guy, he calls me and says, "Hey....want a free bike?"
What was I supposed to do? Tell him no? ???
