Whining speedo!!!
« on: December 17, 2009, 06:31:23 PM »
I feel like such a newb with all my questions. I have been riding for aboutyears. Just never had a bike this old. Here's the problem: When I get over 55 mph the speedo makes a really loud screaming sound, it stops when I decel to 20 mph. If I stay below 55 mph it never makes a sound. WTH is going on? How do I fix it? I thought it was the brakes at first but am now sure it is the speedo.

Maybe it just wants you to slow down ;)

Seriously though, lube the speedo cable.  If that doesn't do it, pull the instrument housing off and lube the gear drive mechanism.

Is the speedo accurate?

Many years ago, the speedo needle on my 750F started jumping and the speedo occasionally squealed, especially in cold weather.  I had an aerosol can of white lithium grease with a straw handy so I squirted grease into the small gap between the collar and the shaft the cable goes into.  That took care of it immediately and it has been fine all these years since.  I keep expecting to have to do it again sometime, but it is still doing OK.

Internal bearings are dry and "spooling" (running around the outer bearing surface instead gliding center within it).

Bearings need a re-lube if they aren't worn out by now.  I'm not sure you can lube it without removing the bezel.  I'll have to go dig out an old one to dismantle.

I had one that did as you describe.  As soon as I bought a replacement gauge, the old one quit screaming!  ;D

ofreen plus one.... the speedo internals are gears, cogs, but the 'socket' where the drive cable attaches could whine for lack of lube.....lube the cable while yer at it....got Play Dough?.., mould a funnel out of P.D. attached to the cable outer, hang cable up vertically and fill funnel with 3-in-1 or similar, allow to creep down to wheel end of cable, wipe excess, reinstall.....
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

Thanks for the assist. Now that temps are below 30 degrees F is when I noticed it. Drives me crazy. I will pull cable and lube it and see what happens.
