need help fixing cats behavior!!!
« on: December 18, 2009, 03:51:29 AM »
My wifes cat is 6 months old and is now physically big enough that he can jump up on the table from the ground. We've tried everything we can think of to curb this behavior, spray with water, make loud noises, but so far nada. Theres never food up there, and he always has fresh food and water. I'm at a loss for solutions to this unacceptable behavior. I know theres a bunch of cat gurus on here, so I'm hoping someone will have a solution.

Thanks,

Brandon

maybe a new cat

Or you could use a water spray bottle with a little soap**, right in the face, just a few times and they will often learn not to perform that behavior.

Of course it will start licking the inside of your shoes every night as payback. You will know by how much your feet stink.

**left the soap out.

If there's no food on the table, he's just looking to get a rise out of you.
You could get the kitty sized ball and chain at http://youreanutifyoulookatthis.com
or just wrap him in duct tape for another 6 months until he starts to calm down.

I actually did have a cat that liked to eat off the table with me. When my wife came down early one morning and strongly suggested that the activity be curtailed, I simple took the cat off the table and put him on the ground. It took a little while, but he stopped getting on the table.

Thanks for changing the photo Mark!

My two cats used to the same thing, and sometimes still do.  I had a friend loan me several devices called Scat Mat.  They are simply a plyable plastic mat with wire in them and a small power source powered by a 9 volt battery.  You can lay them anywhere and when the animal jumps up on it and steps on any two of the wires they get a small static shock.  Trust me this won't hurt him, before I put one out I tested it on my self and it was uncomfortable but not bad.  It's no different then dragging you butt across the car seat and touching the sheet metal and getting a shock.  They have done wonders for keeping them off the kitchen counters and table.

I hope this helps you out.

Travis

P.S.  I still have the mats out on the counter but have not had to turn them on in months.

vinegar and water in spray bottle. Instant cat douche :D. It worked on the cats I used to have. Takes a little bit of consistency also. you just can't do it a couple times. I used to leave the bottle on the counter and they knew not to go there ;)

Vinegar is good too white or apple.

I used flying lessons when we had a water bed. George the cat caught on by about his 3rd flight.  Then the rat Ba****d stated spraying where I laid down in the living room to listen to music.

A nice lesbian couple took him.

I think someone just snapped a picture of a cat taking a nap in a funny place.  The cat looks like he's napping.  He doesn't even look wet...

I don't think anyone DID anything to the cat at all...

I'm not a big cat fan but, looks like most of these guys are so I can see some getting pifted.
I'm a general animal lover and would hate to see any harm to any animal, including Bambi " for all you hunters out there" but, I can also take a joke ;) Unless you really are a cat assassin?

Trav-i I'll have to look into the mats. Until then I think I'll just have to get a bigger spray bottle and make sure there isn't anything up there that can't get wet.

Thanks,

Brandon

I'm surprise they don't have a collar system for cats like the invisible fence thing for dogs. Collar on the cat with a seperate transmitter that you place where you don't want the cat to go.
A little zap and after a while the cat will get the hint...we could make millions!!!

I am not a cat assassin, I have had to put several down both on the farm, and because they became ill or injured.

I have grown more tolerant of cats in the house as my wife trained me to live with her. I also have taken steps like a cat door to the screen porch for it to take its nasty business outside.  The smell turns my stomach, and I spent my young life helping to manually clean the drops behind dairy cows.

But in the end folks, can't we all agree that the millions of dollars pissed away on cats (and their evil cousins dogs) would be better spent educating our children, building wind farms, feeding the mentally handicapped?  I would gladly send the additioan donation out every month.

They make a spray called "Bitter Apple" that we used to use with our dog for stuff like that...might work with cats too?

Oh and that toilet pic of the cat is most certainly a bad photoshop job, between the lighting and the jagged edges along the top edge of a poorly cropped cat pic...

cats are "supposed" to hate the smell of citrus, tell that to hamish who usually shows up when i eat an orange to get a handout. i used one of the smaller supersoaker squirtguns and after a bit, the cats just had to HEAR me pick the thing up and theyd scatter. we used the vinegar/water thing at the big cat sanctuary i volunteered at in tampa http://www.bigcatrescue.org/ to great affect, not only to keep the "kids" like Hercules the snow leopard from going places we didnt want him but as an anti-bite spray.

If you want to be your animal's master, get a dog.

Bucky, is it the smell of the vingar they hate?  I have some of the bitter apple spray and it worked really well to keep the cat from biting cords. My concern with putting it on the table is if he gets it on his paws will he stop grooming himself?
Would using a strong vinegar water mix deter him from hopping on the table due to the smell?

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the suggestions!

if the bitter apple works on the cords, put it on the table legs first to see if that works, it wont keep the cat from washing himself i dont think.

The spray bottles always worked for me to the point that all I had to do was hold it in my hand.  The mats work very good but I have been told by the one supplier of the invisible fence/collar device that they don't work well with cats.  We have a fenced yard and it is fairly successful in keeping them in.  My calico loves to be in the yard but at times refuses to come in the house.  It took a few times being sprayed with the garden house to get the message and then all I had to do was pick up the hose and she would run for the door.  While I was doing this I would say in a loud stern voice "get in the house".  Now all I have to do is call "get in the house" and she runs for the door.

The one thing I found really handy was on of those battery powered squirt guns that made a noise, after a bit you didn't need water in it just the noise would send everybody going for cover, good for cat fights, climbing on tables, not going out when supposed to, etc.

reminds me of bedtime, sort of. i turn to hamish and say "time for bed" and even if he doesnt want to (spitting and growling at me over his shoulder) he goes every time. then, they have ME trained too. at 9:30 every night if i forget they come and get me and tell me it's time for a few treats. and they all gather around the bedside table where i lock the treats away. dunno what i'd do without the little peckerheads
