I HATE winter
« on: December 18, 2009, 12:50:35 PM »
every year, right about this time i start asking myself if i'm full bore, bat#$%* crazy for wanting to live up north in the rustbelt again. it's 34 and raning as hard as a summertime thundershower, likely going to freeze really good tonight too. it's funny, when i was growing up in connecticut then vermont, i LIVED for winter, i skied, i had an old radio flyer sled and the owner of the local golf course, who was a good friend of my dad, would let us ride our toboggans down the bigassed hills (as long as we didnt use anything with runners) not much better in life than a pint of MR Bostons blackberry brandy in your jacket pocket riding the toboggans until your extremities were numb. NOW you cant pay me to go out in the cold, wet weather unless it was for something important like kitty litter, toilet tissue or beer. Winter sucks!

It's all about perspective Bucky I was born and raised in Vancouver BC roughly the same weather as Seattle and London And everytime I went east it snowed on me so I figured California would be OK but it got to the point that I actually missed the seasons changing so back to the great white north, but this time I went to Ontario where every winter it snows on me again and I've gotten used to it, it is a great time to mellow out, all the city people have gone back to the rat race and and life slows down for renewal, yes it's a pain in the ass to have to go out when the snow is going past your window horizontally but you try and arrange things so that you don't have to. Yes my aches and pains come back but it seems mostly in the transitional seasons. Simply perspective.

absolutely, i think i'd hate the cold/damp ALOT less if i didnt have the arthritis in my hands, knees and spine to contend with. this time of year i take alot of oxyconting and getting under an electric blanket since i wont turn my heat up past 60.

I can stand any kind of cold but 95 degree + heat I can't take anymore.

So screw summer!

Winter?
Is that when there is a bunch of white stuff on the ground?  :-\
The tourists all have ski racks on top of their cars?
Most driveways are sheets of glare ice, (couldn't ride if I wanted to),
snowplows rush by, and a 'heat wave' is described as temperatures above freezing,

....ahhh winter in Vermont.

peace,
michel

a Sicilian from connecticut heard it just about daily too  :D

doc has told me that i've become acclimated to the weather here. i dont really mind the days when it's 98 degrees with a feels like/heat index of  115 or so. the only 2 problems are my electrical bill and the fact that my protective gear is a touch warm when i want to ride  ;D

Yesterday in Western North Carolina (Buncombe County) it start snowing big, heavy, wet, and constant.  Around 9PM the power went out.

So we wake up to REALLY deep snow.  Around 2:30 PM the power comes back on.  The news says we got 17 inches and we're lucky- most places still don't have power.

I've been here 14 years and this is the worst.  I sure hope it's an anomoly- this has been a crummy year weather-wise.  I make coffee and go into my unheated garage just to look at the motorcycles.  And pray the almost dead locust tree next to the garage doesn't fall on the garage for another 30 years...

You thought I was done, didn't you.  Well- I've been thinking a lot about this addiction to motorcycles.  It's just stupid.  Doesn't make a bit of sense.  I go bat-#$%*e when I don't ride for a couple of days.  I'm a nervous wreck.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

I know that it's warm here in Arkansas, compared to where some of you are, BUT to ME, it's cold! I've lived my life in Arkansas (traveled while in the Air Force and to different locations for schools while in the Army Reserves and working Civil Service) and I've enjoyed visiting lots of different states and 3 countries, but I'm happy to be here in Arkansas. I just wish that, if it's winter, there would be Winter type weather. I've seen the temps go up and down like a window shade. That's how folks get sick. Me, I'm looking for Spring, just like Jeff. ;) Just like Uncle Ernie, I'm ready to RIDE! ;)

well with a second car having to be put on hold, i thought i'd start toughening myself up with relation to cold tolerance. i rode nearly a half tank of gas this evening, at slightly dumb speeds at times. i'm just now starting to feel my face, with the help of about 8ounces of Wild Turkey 101  :D

Just got in from an hour of snow removal.  round one is done - I got rid of 8", and there is no end in sight.  Expect to have at least another 8" by morning.  Better than doing 16" at once.

I'm with you, just finished the first round as well, about the same amount and forecast. Today was the first time I thought that I wouldn't have to shovel anymore if I lived in an over 55 complex. Maybe it's time to think about heading south?
