The Beatles : On record
« on: December 18, 2009, 01:55:34 PM »
i dont usually rave on about something i've seen on television but THIS deserves it. FANTASTIC program about the evolution of the Beatles, the band and their music with commentary from all 4 beatles and george martin. some fantastic old footage from more than 45 years ago. check your bography channel scedule, i know this is on several times over the weekend.

this is the channels decription of the show: In 1962, an unknown group from Liverpool entered Abbey Road Studios to record their debut single. During the next eight years they created what is arguably regarded as the greatest collection of studio recordings of the 20th century.  This special charts The Beatles' extraordinary journey in the studio from "Please Please Me" to "Abbey Road" and reflects on how they developed as musicians, matured as songwriters and created a body of work that sounds as fresh in 2009 as the time it was recorded. Narrated entirely by John, Paul, George, Ringo and Sir George Martin, the documentary features over 60 classic songs, rare footage and photos from The Beatles' archives and never heard before out-takes of studio chat from the "Abbey Road" recording sessions.

looks like it's on saturday @ 10AM EST, and a buttload of other times over the next week and a half. Beatles fans, do yourselves a favor and try to see this. I am nearly as big a fan of The Beatles as i am of The Grateful Dead, and i saw them 178 times live over 15 years.

when i'm hurting to do much more than sit, i tend to either read for 12 hours a day or watch alot of the history/discovery channel type shows. it's been cold and wet the past week, guess what i've been doing for 18 hours a day? besides eat oxycontin and smoke a little homegrown, green, smokable pain medicine?

I'm a big Beatles fan as well.  I'll look for the special.

If you want something else to drag you into places you've never been, look up Badfinger.. and I'm not talking about their big hits (Without You, Come and Get It, Baby Blue, No Matter What, Day After Day)... I'm talking about all the other stuff that you've never heard.

The album "Wish You Were Here" is a masterpiece.  Holy guacamole, these guys did some amazing stuff - particularly Pete Ham.  The guy had more range and quality in his voice than any human should have a right to have.  His song writing was amazing.  His guitar skills bested all his peers at the time.  Pete played at Bangladesh for George (Here Comes the Sun), on Lennon's albums (Instant Karma for one).. and Pete and Tom Evans sung on Ringo's "It Don't Come Easy".

These guys had the world in their hands and then were excruciatingly destroyed by bad judgment and management (two suicides in the band).

I've been listening to XM channel 46 on my 1 hour drives to and from a work location. They are playing the remastered versions. While there is only so much that can or should be done to the vocals, the instrumentals have been obviously improved in certain areas. Check it out.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

i downloaded the re-mastered discography (just kidding i didnt download these if the FBI is watching) :D
Abbey Road Studios (where several of their albums were recorded) did the work

A crew of engineers at London’s Abbey Road Studios have spent four years working on the remasters using new technology and vintage equipment, the press release says, in an effort to preserve “the authenticity and integrity of the original analogue recordings” and ensure “the highest fidelity the catalog has seen since its original release.”

i loaded my home cd changer this morning with all their albums and i've been listening to them in chronological order most of the day

Were the reissues done on cd? The thing that's seems weird to me is that cd's are not very high fidelity. I can't believe if you were going to digitally remaster stuff in 2009 that you wouldn't sample it at 24 bps, and 48 or 96 k hz and put it out on Blu ray DVD or something. At least that would be using more of the technology we already have, and the difference is really noticeable, even to me and I'm deaf as a post. We've gotten so used to MP3 and other "compressed" read stripped bare files that stuff on cd sounds great. That aint right.

you are right mp3 files are terrible , cds are bad enough [ you loose about 30% of the original recording ]   for me digitally  re mastering is digitally  f*ucked  up i want to hear it the way george martin and the beatles intended not how some anonymous record producer thinks it should sound . if that means a few scratches and blemishes so be it

the original cd issues in 1987 were really poorly done as far as sound quality. the reissues from this year werent re-ixed or anything, the original analog recordings were just digitally remastered. the original cd's from 87 were labeled aad, or analog-analog-digital. the new ones are add i dont exactly know what the differences between the 2 are but there is a pretty sizable difference.
