I was looking to pick up some really nice high impact sockets for my bike and was wondering if anyone knew off hand what sizes will cover most aspects of the bike. I would probably want 10, 11, 12, 17, any other common ones? I would rather buy them individually rather than drop the bucks on an entire set.

7,8,9,10,12,14,17 are the most common ones, but why not buy a complete set and then you are covered.

All the sets these days come with a bunch of crap I don't want. A crappy plastic case, a few stupid adapters. I'd just rather have the sockets and throw them in the top of my tool box. Thanks though. I didn't realize I needed to go as small as 7.

I don't remember ever using a 7mm on any of my bikes. It's entirely possible I have, but I just don't recall ever using anything below an 8mm.

Cant say as I would want to use an impact on a 10mm bolt head on a bike.. let alone smaller.

What is the torque on them... 6-11ft#s...

The only app I can think of is the brake arm , maybe...end of swingarm.., I guess there is a few places..

you are correct that I would not use an impact socket on anything less than a 12. But i was just remembering what sockets and wrenches are on the top of my tool kit. the ones that i use most. I will admit that the seven is not as common, but I have used it and never the 9, and only once the 11. never the 13

I use "Metrinch" brand sockets, they grab the bolt or nuts on the "flats" not the "corners" like normal sockets so are brilliant for undoing worn or stripped bolts and nuts, and as the name suggests, that one socket will work on Metric, AF, BSW and BSF nuts and bolts.

Beautiful British drop forged steel, chromed and polished to a mirror finish and guaranteed to perform for life, no questions asked. If only my wife had that warranty.......

I have several 'Metrinch' spanners that work really well on rounded fasteners. But Snap-on called their stuff 'Flank-Drive', but it's several times the price.

I use 8,10,12,14 and 17mm size sockets on my Honda, but 6,8,10 and 13 on my R1 and KTM enduro.

Never have found a use for 15 or 16mm tools, except as spacers or tools for pushing bearings out.

I was planning on using impact sockets for their toughness. I have cracked so many regular sockets trying to loosen bolts. Am I wrong in thinking the impact sockets would be more durable?

They will be more durable, but a quality set of regular sockets should serve you quite well. Also keep in mind that in some places clearances are very tight and thick-walled impact sockets won't fit.

...and many set's don't include 17mm. 19mm comes in handy from time to time as well.

+1 on the thick-walled sizes.

I have both standard sockets and impact. I very rarely use impact on my CB. Usually the thinner standard sockets and elbow grease. I just don't trust the bolts so much with the 1200 ft-pound snap-on gun...

I've had good luck with craftsman "universal" wrenches and a breaker bar for stubborn bolts.

Regardless, make sure you grab a 14mm.

Isn't there a 7 somewhere on the carbs IIRC?

No 9, 11, 15 or 16 anywhere on the bike that I can remember.

I found 2 7mm head hex screws yesterday, one on the neutral switch and one on the oil pressure switch. Cheers, Terry.

I see no reason to use impact's on a bike....chrome sockets can be warranted, most of the stores won't notice the air hammer marks on the socket or why it broke they just replace them..My snap-on guy always checked for hammer marks on the sockets...Also bottom front motor mount I think is 16mm..

I dont have a butterfy 3/8 impact, just a big old 1/2inch, wich does not feel right on a lor of buike stuff. On my own bike I like to know wether parts stay tight, use a ratchet or breaker bar to loosen, then an impact would help spin em off.

Diff scenario working on bikes by the hour, though..

Cordless 3/8 impact (w. lithium batteries

) makes for very quick disassembly

when i worked at a BMW cycle dealer, impact tools were NOT allowed to be used at all, EVER.
