Hedy would have gotten it right of the bat.  Most people know her as an actress, but she was a scientist as well.

Hedley.... not so much.

I'd be her lab assistant, yikes.
No.

I didn't want to answer that question. ;D

But you did answer it. The answer is that swallows can't carry coconuts. Just like water can't squirt to the outside of the boat.

But what if there were a really strong wind?  Could the Venturi effect suck the water up and out into the sea?

Impossible for the water to squirt 'over the side' without being pumped, could not squirt above the water level outside the boat...pumped= no-sink; not pumped= sink.......?!
Duuh, already solved....!!!, next time I'll read all the posts !

this reminds me of the old disney cartoons from the 50's where (i think) it was mickey mouse is in one of those ceramic bathtubs with a pipe leading from the drain to a shower head. he turns on the shower and the water sprays out of the boat causing it to move.

no. it can't "squirt" out the boat. if you did what i mentioned in the disney bathtub boat, the bouyancy force and force of the bathtub (acting from gravity) would equal each other at some point only causing the water inside the pipe to be the same level as outside the bathtub. but, the ceramic tub might be too heavy and sink

so my final conclusion: the plane can fly

That's silly.  Planes can't fly underwater.
