Calling all carb wizards. Calling all carb wizards!
« on: December 13, 2009, 10:19:30 AM »
Why won't my snowblower stay running when I engage the tiller or put it under any load. Idles fine, but stops instantly when I try to blow snow.  ???

Something to do with the governor linkage perhaps? Unlike our bikes, machines like snowblowers and lawnmowers have governors to keep speed at a constant level under load. The governor can be either an air vane or a centrifugal type. There is a mechanical linkage from the governor to the carb throttle. Find it and check that it moves freely or that it has not come unattached?

Sounds like fuel starvation, drop all 4 bowls and check the jets and emulsion tubes and float levels. ;D

Is it a newer model? I know that newer blowers are jetted very lean for emmissions and require that you warm them up quite a while before you can blow snow.

Some sort of 'kill' switch?  Dies when you engage something or other?

Does it have pods? ;D

It has been my experience that most problems are carb related as these get such irregular use and can sit for weeks and months at a time between use.

It's running too lean.

ive heard about this snow stuff, its inside my freezer, has your machine got a saftey switch ?try using the choke as you engage to see if its leaning out as mentioned before, try a little at first ,maybe full once or twice,,be aware of flooding and fouling the plug though!you say it stops instantly,,like a faulty safety switch,,,im guessing this is a ride on machine?

when i lived in new england, i would boil a small pot of water when i was getting ready to go out and clear the driveway. when i was ready to go i'd pour about 3/4 of it on the cylinder head to get that nice and warm and the rest on the carb. i had a 30+ year old snowblower that always ran, and ran good. rebuilt the carb every 3rd year, dad did it every 5th year.

...stops instantly? could be frozen. Often times when they are put away, water will pool under the impeller and freeze which locks it in place. Check to see if it rotates freely.

If it is free, then like TT says, it's running lean. try a little choke to see if that helps and if it does, you may need to drop the bowl and clean the main. It's fairly easy (compared to our bikes). 3/8" wrench un doos the nut which doubles as the main jet. The bowl has a reuseable o-ring to seal it so no parts should be needed.

 Cheers, Matt.
