stripped cam tower bolts
« on: December 21, 2009, 10:26:47 PM »
The 4 center 5mm cam tower bolts were stripped on my 750. Per a post I read somewhere here I tapped the holes with 1/4" fine threads. I started the tap through the towers to insure they were straight, then removed the towers and completed the tapping. I flushed the holes and installed the 2 -1/2" long bolts. If I had a bottom tap 2 -3/4" bolts might even fit.  I didn't even pre-drill the holes or ream the towers.
Thanks to whoever mentioned it. I searched and didn't find this anywhere else now.

I did something similar to that, but used threaded rod and ny-loc nuts with a washer under the nut, essentially making studs instead of using bolts.  Now there's no worry of them stripping out.

I had the same issue only on the right front hole though. Thats the worst one because of the tach gear leaves little clearence for a new bolt. I noticed the stock bolts were only long enough to use half the thread in the head. meaning only the top half of the threads were stripped. So for my cheapo fix I found a 6x1.0x75mm flange bolt worked perfect. No washer needed and fit under the tach gear just fine.

A smorgasbord of solutions, I love it.

In retrospect, I like the helicoil solution better.
