Handlebar I.D.
« on: December 22, 2009, 08:53:33 AM »
I have seen these style bars on two bikes. One in person and one on the net. But, I cant find a politically correct name for them. I want to say they are called "ace bars" but a google image search pulls up nothing but clubman's. Can anybody tell me the correct name for them. I like the looks.

Aren't they just clubman's with the handles pointed down?

no...look close, they have no rise when mounted with the grips pointed back. They are mounted incorrectly (I believe) in the picture.

No man, crkhobbit is right those ARE clubmans.  There's a couple different ways to position clubman bars, this is one of them.  Imagine the way most people position clubman bars, the grips pointing down, U shape facing up, etc.  Now flip the bars completely around and the grips are going to point up, rase the u shape to face the rider and what you have is what your looking at in that picture.  I've actually thought about doing the same thing to mine just for gicks and shiggles.

pictures of upside down clubmans for comparison.

You did not examine the first pic close enough. I am aware of the different positions for clubmans. the bars in my first pictures are not upside down clubman's. You can see in the last three pics I posted, when mounted upside down, clubman's will have the grips angled back towards the rider. The bars in the first pic do not. the ends of the bars with the grip are pointed straight down, not angled forwards or backwards whatsoever. If you were to look straight down on the first bars pictured while mounted on the bike, they would look like a straight bar with no pull back. Also, look at the portion that I circled in red. take another look and compare what the joint looks like on the clubman bar  compared to the first one I posted.

No, no I saw the differences you've pointed out, I totally understand what your saying.  But joint difference or not, pull back or no, they're still clubman style handle bars.  I've heard of ace clubmans, they may be them, I've also heard of Laverda style clubmans.  Look them up.

I bet their a pair of Tommaselli clubmans.  These Tommaselli 233 road race bars look VERY similar to the ones in your first pic.  Apparently the 233 is discontinued but I bet someone makes something like them.  The Tommaselli Condor clubman is also pretty cool(botom pic).  Fully adjustable clubmans.  I think there's been a few threads regarding handlebars where these have come up.

Hmmm, maybe im interested in a set of bars that are extinct now.  :-\ I searched google, and it appears to me that the Laverda style bars are the adjustable style clubmans and it seems that alot of people call regular clubman's "Ace Bars". I did however find the image below which is pretty similar. to my first pic. Heres the url of the site: http://www.burtonbikebits.net/handlebars.htm

Interesting stuff though. no doubt.

the ones in the first pic are the cheapies. i ordered them from mikesxs.com  and the black ones on the chopper are the good ones you can get from old bike barn.  the cheapies arent near as agressive as the better ones.  i have used both on my honda and Ducati Gt1000
2004 Ducati 999 mono posto.
-Full Termignoni exhaust
-Lots 'o' carbon fibre

I looked on ebay again and didn't find them, I must have seen them on mikesxs then because I know I saw some a few days ago.

Part #25-0109 at mikesxs.com.  Go to Chassis/Brakes, click on handlebars and they're the first ones that come up for me.  1.5" pull back which is almost flat.

just ordered one from the link above for a cb500. had been looking for this design for a while, friend has it on his rd400, looks better than the other clubman design fwiw.

i have seen it referenced as a BSA ACE bar as well. will post pics when it arrives.

got the bars today. looks like they will fit great. and look like the same ACE bars as seen listed as BSA items. and its not the extreme drop that other bars have so I am pleased. the weld looks like ass. if in the spring i like the angles I might make up a set out of 7/8 myself.

think I will be drilling holes in these to run the wiring, not looking forward to that.

but anyways the look and feel is bang on, they should work and the price is ok, ordered on the 23 arrived the 24. will post pics as soon as I can.

on the first post.... they are mounted the way they are because of the m/c. i have the same bars, and to mount them the way they were designed for takes some effort... i.e. one guage, or like mine a 73 cb500, no dash panel between the guages and you have to butt the guages together.
i actually might be willing to sell mine, they are a little tweaked from a p.o. drop... but im sure they can be tweaked back. not bad but just barley noticable. ill try and get pics this weekend. here is the best pic i have at the moment...

if the master cyclinder is problem, is there a suitable unit from a different year or make?

one from a sport bike if you like the look. mount the reservoir wherever you please. You dont have to worry about if being unlevel.
