Tappet/Valve Adjustment Covers Question.
« on: December 20, 2009, 05:44:47 PM »
Are these babies pretty much universal for 550 and 750's throughout the 70's? I just bought these on ebay and are hoping they will fit my 75 550. What do you think?

The tappet covers are universal for most Honda bikes of the same era.  If they fit a 750 then they'll fit your 550 for sure.

Cool.  I would say they're the same for all Honda models of that era, but I don't know that for a fact.  I do know they're the same for all sohc4's, with the exception of the 650 which has a completely different valve cover design than the rest.  I also know that the 350 and 360 twins use those same tappet covers.  The GL1000 also uses one of the same for the drive shaft oil filler hole.

Honda was pretty smart about finding ways to save money on production. :)

Oh, I watched my Dad turn into a Granddad before my eyes so I know very well the knight-and-day difference.  The main difference is that he gets to be the fun guy, now, and let the little ones do whatever they want, but only because he then gets to turn them back over to their parents who have to deal with all of the consequences.

When I was little I remember my Grammie telling my Mom that it's only worth having and raising children for the grandchildren that you get! ;D ;D

I have a feeling that there won't be enough clearance between the frame and number 2 and 3 inlet tappet covers for those finned items...I might be wrong. I have a photo somewhere of the top of my 550 engine and this is what i'm thinking of.

They look to be much shorter than my ratchet/socket combo that I use to remove my stock covers, so I don't think there will be any clearance issue.

Here's a good discussion on tappet covers.

Is there no respect?

its amazing how hard it is to find tappet covers if you lose/break one. i was checking clearance and broke the tread from overtightening the cover on my CB500. went to the vintage cycle shop and some others in town looking for one. no luck! strange, you would think they would carry something like that. luckily my brother had an old CB350 and i used one from it until i bought a few extras off eBay. word of advice, keep a couple extra tappet covers on you if your road trippin.
do you have a picture of the finned ones on your bike? I'd like to see how they look.

I have the week after Christmas off and hope to get the engine painted and install the stainless kit. I'll get some pics up by the end of next week. Do you think I can put a bike together in my basement and then drive it up the stairs in the spring?  ;D

I think I noticed that TAS in Indiana was selling new tappet gaskets cheap. Yours looks like it has the groove, some do not. Good gaskets will keep your nice freshly painted motor clean. Not sealed well and its a mess. let me see if I can add this link   http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda-CB750-Tappet-Cover-O-Rings-CB550-CB500-CB-750-CB_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem58851cc435QQitemZ380190377013QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

If they aren't overtightened to begin with they'll last forever. I'd go to a hardware store. When you install them, put a least a fingertip of oil on them. Some install lube, teeny bit of grease, etc. hand tighten and a skosh with a wrench.

The ones with the fins give enough to grab onto, just handtighten, maybe with a glove, and some lube on the Orings.
