Is there a "How To" for installing tapered bearings?
« on: December 30, 2009, 04:54:08 PM »
I've looked all over and can't find one. I replaced/re-used my old bearings today, and I must have replaced the round ones with square ones  ;D Anyway, is there a step by step on installing tapered bearings somewhere. CB550 - 1975.

There are a lot of threads on tapered bearings. Many with pictures.

But we were boys, and boys will be boys, and so they will. To us, everything was dangerous, but what of that? Had we not been made to live forever?

I did mine a couple of months ago.  After reading as much as I could about people's experiences, I found it even easier than I'd imagined.

This writ-up helped me quite a bit:

Once the new bearing races are seated, the rest is cake.  Be sure to grease up those bearings when you go for final assembly.  I read about one forum member who didn't grease.  Needless to say, his new steering bearings siezed in short order -- proved to be a good point of caution for me.

I got an All Balls kit for my 350F.  Looks like my concern over getting the races out is well founded..

I did this to my 550 last summer and was surprised at how easy it was. took a couple hours. There was an article on how to do it on a 500 in motorcycle classics a couple months ago. pretty much exactly the same as your 550. you might be able to find that article on their website.
