re-finished inside of fenders
« on: January 10, 2010, 10:30:22 AM »
I wanted to clean up and paint the inside of the fenders on the CB750 and here are the results.
First, major sand blasing to clean crud and rust off. Paint with 2 coats of sel etching primer. Painted 3 coats of "instant chrome" paint from hardware store. Heated for 1 hr @ 200 F. I think I will wait a few days and seal it with a few coats of plastic spray.
Overall good result.

: Never mind they are showing now.. :
The pictures did not show because the path is http://C:\Documents and Settings\admin\My Documents\My Pictures\Fender colseup.jpg you need to use the additional options link at the bottom of the message box and browse for the files they will then be up loaded to the server, assuming they meet the size restriction.

It sounds like a good plan.. Just make sure to give it enough clear coat to make it nice and smooth so that you can wash the gunk off easy enough.. Are you painting the tops of the fenders? If not make sure to mask them off well before sand blasting..

Very nice indeed.. Great work. Just a note, I tried to use a clear coat on my spray on chrome and it dulled it. After reading the can (I know) it said not to use it on Bright Coat Finishes.. most of the spray on chrome are.. So watch what you use for the clear coat. or maybe you know all that ready..

Looks good.  I did something similar, but with a black industrial teflon paint that my father scored from one of his old military buddies.  It is smooth as glass and nothing sticks to it.  It came in a spray can with no label.

Yeah, good job mate, most of the rust under your fenders is caused by the chroming process, the chemicals used to prepare the metal for the plating process (pickling) is never properly cleaned out, and promotes rust from the get go. A lot of "old timers" will clean the underside of freshly chromed fenders with a mild acid, then paint it with silver paint, to seal it against further rust attack. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

i wonder if the por-15 i have left over after coating a tank might work under there too. i know the stuff is as tough as diamonds, i couldnt get it off of a screwdriver i used to stir it, i whacked it with a 2lb hammer, finally had to take an angle grinder to it.

I'd guess it would, here's what the Por-15 website says:

Quote
POR-15 is the product that changed car restoration permanently and is used by manufacturers world-wide to protect their factories from rust and corrosion. POR-15's non-porous coating keeps moisture away from metal permanently. The secret lies in POR-15's curing process. Most paints dry through evaporation, but POR-15 dries faster when moisture is present.
Now add to that POR-15's incredible hardness, toughness, and flexibility and you have a coating that is practically indestructible.
POR-15 is great for auto restoration, but it's also a state-of-the-art concrete preservative and floor coating.
Try the many uses of POR-15 and you'll understand why this incredible product is now sold in 52 countries around the world!

That looks really nice! Great Job. I might have to try that on one of my bikes. Cool, thanks for posting.  :)

So watch what you use for the clear coat
Good advice Scott! I am not too worried if it dulls the finish a bit as long as it helps keep the moisture out. A small test area is in order.
I had also considered using automotive undercoating instead of the chrome.
This "instant chrome" is not great to fix real chrome parts that you can see  but it did work well for the fender insides.
I also sand blasted and painted an exhaust clamp to see how it looked. Worked well but I don't know how it will stand up to heat. Did a tester with one "chrome" and one coated with caliper gloss paint that is supposed to withstand higher temps.
I'll post pics later.

I will get a build thread started.
The bike has been out on the road already and didn't look too bad but I wanted to get the frame cleaned up and painted so a complete re-build is now in order. ;D

Well sounds good, post the final result I would like to see how it all shacks out. I wish chroming parts was cheaper.. I have some I would love to do but will end up painting because any thing looks better then the way it is now.

Yea Area 51 sounds about right.. He should have had the contents analyzed by CSI so it could be reproduced.  ;D
