here in wonderful, lovely Columbia, they do a reunion of Doolittles Raiders every year since this is where they trained for their mission, bombing out of what is now Owens field. theres usually a b-25 doing an overflight and a reunion dinner with the surviving members. thats another plane i'd love to fly in too, despite my fear of heights anf flying LOL.

the guys on both sides, any sides,,that flew this sort of aircraft were always short lived,my hats off to any survivours!!plenty of planes would have had malfunctions and crashed ,let alone having tons of lead and explosives hurled at you, those multi engine bombers are the pinnacle as far as im concerned.my mum had a sister killed in london from an insendary explosion, grandad was an ww1 vet and a fire warden during ww2 ,mum still cant stand on tv if a show has the bomb raid siren sound.,these are all beautifull aircraft, with one goal .

Some pictures I took at a local airshow in 2006. I know, the last shot is of the Blue Angels flying the F-18, but they do fly the first two versions of the Hornet...  ;)

That is true. It is estimated that in Vietnam 50% of the losses in Helicopters were mechanical failures, not enemy fire. All Aircraft take a lot of maintenance and in Wars the time and parts can be limited.

My Father in Law was in the first wave at Normandy and as tough a bastid as he was he could not watch a war film.

Some shots from the National War Museum in Canberra, Australia.  The lighting was really low so the shots are not the best.

Messerschmidt BF-109  Most produced aircraft of WWII credited with more aerial victories than any other aircraft.  An interesting feature is the inverted Daimler Benz V-12.  Notice the low exhaust headers.  This plane still has it's original paint.

Messerschmidt 163 Comet rocket powered airplane

Mitsubishi Zero.  Very rare aircraft.

Curtis P-40  Kittyhawk  with the tail of the Zero above

V-1 Buzz Bomb nicknamed the "Doodlebug".  Powered by a pulse jet engine it was the worlds first cruise missile.

Close up of the Messerschmidt 262.  First operational jet fighter.  The nacelle inside the engine housed a pull start 10 hp 2 stroke motor that spun up the turbine for main engine start.  You can make out the handle in the hole in the center.

Not to rain on yer parade, the me109 was not the most produced aircraft of ww2.  The ILYUSHIN-2 SHTURMOVIK
RUSSIAN TANK BUSTER was the most produced at over 36,000 units.  ;)

The AC-47 (military adaptation of the DC-3) saw action in Vietnam as the infamous "Puff The Magic Dragon." Very interesting to see in action provided you were on the right side.  ;)
Here is a nice video of "Puff" or "Spooky"

We may be splitting hairs but I think the numbers for the Ilyushin may include planes built before and after WWII including the Ilyushin II-10.  Even so it was the most produced aircraft of ALL times.  The ME 109 numbers are around 30,500+ during the war and 34,000 overall.   The ME 109 is the most produced during the war and the most produced fighter of all times.

Ever read the book Loaded by Robert Sabbag?  The  biography of Allen Long who pioneered marijuana smuggling from Columbia in a DC-3.  It's a great read.

I found this old Army film comparing the Huey to the Cobra. I think the Army had one voice over guy.  I think he was also the voice on the Venereal Disease film.

The ammo bay also made a great place to take a nap if you were not too tall.

No, I have some duplicate books to return so I will pick one up. I did hear of some guys moving contraband from Columbia using DC-3s. They were the perfect plane for that. There were plenty of them on the market after WWII. They could carry far more than the rated weight.

The book is also under a second title called Smoke Screen.  Don't know why it is listed under two different titles but it is the same book.

My dad who was a WW 2 Vet that Passed on 6/7/09 was really into old Aircrafts I know he has hundreds of Pitchers of planes from shows and H.A.R.P. Historical aircraft restoration project .
I'll post some in the near future. For now I'll post a few from a air show at Jones Beach here on Long Island.

I live in the flight pattern of the Stearman biplane fly-in Galesburg Illinois, they pass right over when getting in formation for the contest. very cool, sometimes over 100 parked here.

I have never read that before.  I have read of the DB 605 being one of the better aircraft engines of the era.  It had direct fuel injection giving it an advantage over carburated  engines like the Merlin in high G maneuvering.

This came off the Collins Foundation website.  The ME 262 is a replica of the two seat version used as a trainer and a night fighter.  The only departure from the original was modern instruments and engines.
