anyone here into medieval re-enactment and medieval weapons?
« on: December 28, 2009, 12:01:03 AM »
years ago, when i was really active in the SCA (i did 13th century scotland) i had both an authentic Dubh and a Claymore made in the same style. the place i was living right before i moved here was robbed and i lost ALL of my stuff including both the dagger and sword AND my polished steel/lacquered leather armor for me and my horse. i have been thinking about getting back into it in a smaller way and i'm wondering if, maybe, someone here works for or IS an armorer that can do a nice heavy Claymore, in trade for bike parts or maybe my skills as a certified BMW and modern Triumph tech? i also have a couple more guitars i'm letting go, maybe you'd like to have an electric 12 string? this is not a right now kind of thing but something i'd eventually like to start doing in 2010. i actually know how to make my own swords and knives but i dont have the tools anymore (one of the needed things is a 48" long propane or coal fired forge)

My Dad used to be part of a medieval re-enactment troupe. Performed at local shows and had a regular booking at a medieval eating house believe it or not. He packed in a long time back and so I have his broadsword and his chain hammer (16 pound spiked ball on 18" of chain!). He wouldn't let go of the dagger or mace just yet but I'm working on him. I keep the chain hammer tucked up in the garage but handy enough so that if someone wanted to jump me in there they'd get their bones mashed for their trouble  ;D

Lots of medieval armourers over this side of the pond Bucky - not sure it'd be worth your while pursuing them though with the obvious postage costs...

If you end up needing to buy one, I like Starfire swords out of NY.  We have several of their pieces.  They make a big ol' Claymore but it may or may not be to your taste:

48" blade, 68" overall, 13 lbs.

Starfire swords get used by some of the jousters on the renfaire circuit, quality is good.

Too bad you're not closer, I'd offer to make you some cuir bouilli.

Oh, I know a few SCA folk also so I can ask around if you're looking to have a custom piece made.

I made a claymore'esque type sword once. Weighed a ton.

I could look into trying to make one for you Fuzz. You got specs you want to stick to or?

All your weapons pale in comparison to the one that Brother Maynard carries.
