any fender guitar gurus here?
« on: December 25, 2009, 12:15:42 AM »
i have had someone offer me a brand new in the box squier jagmaster in trade for me epiphone dr350 12 string and i love the way it sounds and plays with one exception. i really hate the fender tremolo. is there anyways to put a different tailpiece in it to eliminate the tremolo and all the tuning problems it causes?

Just put in all 5 springs, and unscrew (remove) the trem arm.

that'll work. i love the way that jagmaster plays, really sweet action, i have a set of locking grovers that will fit it so the crappy tuners will not be an issue

I'm not familiar with the Jagmaster, but it looks to have a bridge and bridge plate like a strat. Aside from putting in all the springs, make sure the bridge plate is resting completely flat on the face of the body by tightening down the 6 screws that screw the plate to the body.

the hardware on squier guitars leaves something to be desired. made with cheaper metals than the standard fender guitars. i would recommend upgrading to a Wilkinson trem. Guitar Fetish http://store.guitarfetish.com/tremelos.html has the best deals and i've dealt with them many times. I've gone through a few Squier and Agile guitar projects and the trem and tuners are the first things i replace. great results. just my 2 cents.

you can also "block" the tremolo if you want to completely eliminate it. very easy to do. just insert a piece of hard wood between the trem block and and the cutout in the body of the guitar. i've seen guitar techs do it before.

I put a block in behind my strat tremolo once to lock it out, worked well.  I wasn't sure, but it seemed like it had better sustain after.  A little extra mass maybe?

i think thats why les-pauls have such great sustain, theyre so heavy and solid.

yep, that should add more sustain. the type of wood you use to block it will also contribute. so bucky katt, what color is the new axe? i'm a sucker for the vintage sunburst.

it's the sunburst. i'd like to put the pickups from the elvis costello jazzmaster in it at some point.
